Shrek Star Names Allure of the Seas

There has been a lot of speculation into who would be the godmother to Royal Caribbean Internationals brand new cruise ship, Allure of the Seas. Suggestions ranged from Oprah Winfrey who classed the ship as one of her favourite things, to Catherine Zeta-Jones who starred in the Chicago film which will now be performed as a stage show onboard the mega-liner. However, it has now been revealed that the 3D animated Shrek star, Princess Fiona will have the honour of being the godmother to the new cruise ship.

The naming ceremony took place at the Allure of the Seas Home port, Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale. Guests were provided with 3D glasses as Princess Fiona was introduced by another star of the film, Shrek’s Donkey. The animated ogre was shown on a screen in the Amber Theatre, hitting a button with a karate chop to smash a bottle of the ship’s hull.

Princess Fiona is not the first animated character to act as godmother to a cruise ship, in 1999 Tinkerbell was announced as the godmother to the Disney Wonder cruise ship for Disney Cruise Line.

There were mixed reactions to the 3D character acting as godmother, some say it is a shame and that Royal Caribbean have used the opportunity as a marketing gimmick, others say that it is a great idea and ties in with the theme of the ship and entertainment available on board.
