Majestic scenery, incredible wildlife and Gold Rush relics await on one of our Alaska cruises.
For the ultimate blend of nature, vibrant townships and frontier culture, look no further than America’s 49th state. Alaska’s vast land affords masses of each one, all in a rugged wilderness setting unrivalled by anywhere else in the world. With much of Alaska only accessible by sea, it’s easy to see why it’s become one of the most popular cruise destinations.
One reason for this popularity is the opportunity Alaska presents to see various stunning wildlife species in their natural habitat. From the deck of your chosen vessel – or the edge of a Zodiac – you may be treated to a school of whales breaching the icy water’s surface while ring-billed gulls and Arctic terns circle overhead. Venture further inland and tread in the footsteps of magnificent bears, caribou and moose, or catch a glimpse of proud bald eagles cutting through the sky in search of their next meal.
Equally suited to both experienced cruisers and those looking to book their cruise holiday, Alaska’s allure will stir even the most hardened adventurer.
Cruise lines that visit Alaska
Nearly all major cruise lines visit Alaska, and it’s not uncommon for operators to position two or more ships in the region permanently throughout the peak months. From ultra-luxury cruises with the likes of Silversea and Regent Seven Seas to small-ship adventures with Ponant and Lindblad Expeditions, the choice is abundant when deciding which line to cruise.
As is the case with cruises in other popular destinations such as the Mediterranean and the Caribbean, the type of Alaska cruise experience you want to have should define which cruise line you choose. For example, if shore excursions and exploration are essential, consider a smaller operator to travel with like-minded guests. On the other hand, if onboard luxury and ship facilities are more important, cruise lines such as Celebrity Cruises, Princess Cruises, and Holland America will be perfect.
Alaska Cruise Itineraries
Various Alaska cruise itineraries are available, with the most common between 7 and 10 days. Longer itineraries will sail round-trip from Vancouver or Seattle, while the shorter sailings will cruise between Anchorage (from the port of Seward) and Vancouver, or vice-versa.
Nearly every Alaska cruise itinerary will sail up the Inside Passage, with most voyages calling at noted ports such as Juneau and Ketchikan. Considered by many to be the ‘Jewel of Alaska’, Juneau acts as a gateway to one of the largest wilderness areas in the United States and is only accessible by boat or small plane. Ketchikan, situated on Alaska’s southeastern coastline, is a town steeped in Native American history and offers access to the stunning Misty Fjords.
Selected Alaska cruise itineraries will also visit Skagway, a former Gold Rush boomtown, while others will include a pre or post-cruise stay in Denali National Park.
The best time to cruise Alaska
The cruise season for Alaska is between May and September, with July and August generally considered the best time to visit on a cruise. These months welcome warmer weather and clearer skies, providing the perfect conditions for kayaking, zodiac trips and gentle hikes. May and June are perfect for catching Alaska in the throes of spring, while September is quieter, with fewer crowds and cooler temperatures.
