Nestled in the Fjord of Trondheimfjorden, Trondheim is Norway's Forth largest urban centre. The port is located 150km north of Oslo, where the river Nidelva meets the Fjord. Its main exports are dry and frozen fish, Silicon and Silica. It's main imports are furniture, stone, tools, vegetables and fruit. The city has a maritime climate but is sheltered from windy conditions along the coast. Settled in Norway's third largest fjord it has many inlets to explore including Dovrefjell national park. Mainly a university town, Trondheim has a cosmopolitan feel. This is juxtaposed by the many wooden houses of Baklandett along the rivers edge, which remind the visitor of Norway's history. The city has many tramlines which connect it with the beautiful mountain and forest recreational area – Bymarka. The city is also the location of the Nidaros Cathedral which is an important Christian pilgrimage and the burial place of Saint Olva who brought Christianity to Norway. The port of Trondheim is where Eric the red, Famously asked king Olva to embark on his voyage to Newfoundland to discover the lands of America.
Trondheim was officially founded in 997 by the Viking King Olva Tryggvason, although people have lived in the mouth of the river for thousands of years. It was the seat of kings and was the capital of Norway till 1217. As the majority of the city is made of wood it has been the victim of many major fires. The greatest of which was in 1681 and led to the city having to be completely redesigned by General Johann Caspar Von Cicignon. His design is what can be seen in the city today. During the second world war the city was occupied from 9 April 1940 and was home to the Infamous Gestapo agent Henry Rinnan.
The main tourist attraction is the Nidaros Cathedral which is one of the most northern Gothic Cathedral. Trondheim also includes a museum of arts and maritime museum. The City is also popular for its ski activities including a cross country ski track in Bymarka and a ski jumping area in Granasen.
If eating out, it's worth seeking out one of the following eateries: Sans Restaurant, Mein Trung Café and Restaurant, Big Horn Steakhouse, Din Konferanse, Frati Restaurant. Most specialise in traditional cuisine, coupled with friendly and welcoming atmospheres.
During Spring and Summer daylight lasts much longer than many towns in Europe due to it's proximity to the Arctic Circle. The Norwegians call this the 'white night'
