San Diego is known for 70 miles of striking coastline, as well as being home to ‘The Big Bay’, with16 bayside parks, promenades and walkways ornamented with eye-catching public art. The San Diego cruise ship terminal is located downtown, a short distance from the numerous attractions.
The San Diego Port District was created in 1962. It was not until 1970 that the first cruise ship offered scheduled cruises out of San Diego, making 10-day trips to Mexico. In an effort to improve the ecological balance of the bay in the 1980’s a wildlife refuge was completed in Chula Vista. The San Diego Cruise Industry Consortium was formed in 1983 to promote San Diego as a cruise destination and homeport.
