Samos Cruises
The port of Samos island is built in the harmonius Lee bay and is considered the national port. The angled wharf runs over 150 metres and is well capable of hosting, at all its sides, more than five ships at the same time, including – passenger car ferries, freighters, ferries, tankers, pleasure and tourist vessels, yachts,fishing and sailing boats. The port boasts modern facilities with plenty of electrical and water supply used throughout the day (it can get very congested, especiallyduring the summer season.) The port of Samos has become a heavy tourist attraction during the last decades and a node which connects Samos with all ports of the Greek mainland, Greek islands and also all islands of the North Aegean and Dodecanese islands. Thereby Samos is connected daily with conventional or high-speed ferries.
In the sixth century BC the tyrannical authoritarian Polycrates constructed shipyards on Samos and built a fleet of around 100 ships to pillage and plunder the surrounding islands. During his reign an advanced aqueduct was constructed inside a tunnel and was one of the wonders of the ancient world. In 522 BC Polycrates was crucified by the invading Persians who would rule absolute until the Romans took possession of Samos in 479 BC. Among the remarkable citizens of Samos were philosopher Epicurus, astronomer Aristarchos and mathematician Pythagoras. Vathi, the capital (and where the port is) has maintained its traditional style into the present, the coastal road and long quay pulsate with life and vibrancy in the summer nights.
The archaeological museum in Samos town is most impressive and well worth a visit and it contains a breadth of ranging statues and artefacts from ancient Greece . The ancient ruins such as the Efpalinion tunnel, Heraion and Kastro are all well worth your time as well.
Iraion has grown into a large tourist area and there are many tavernas and bars. The town of Paleokastro is much quieter where you can sit outside in the square and enjoy your meals, on special occasions there will be music and dancing in the square which you are most welcome to join in.
