Monastir Cruises
Monastir is one of Tunisia's main cities, with a history dating back as far as 797 AD. The name itself derives from the French word for monastery.
The modern beach resort runs along the edges of the sun splashed Mediterranean, and offers good weather almost year round. Those on cruises more interested in culture should make for the impressive old town.
Here, walls dating back to the ninth century encase the Ribat, a massive tower that combined both military and religious functions. Construction started in the ninth century, and took a full two hundred years to complete. Today, it remains one of the most original and intact buildings of its kind, and houses a museum. Its scale and condition have led to it being featured in no less than eight films over the years.
There is also a mosque dating from the 11th century, though the foundations actually originate from two hundred years earlier, and the more contemporary Bourguiba mausoleum, built for Tunisia's late president.
The waterfront is alive with more contemporary treasures, including a stylish, yacht studded marina that is almost within touching distance of the old walls, and a chic, modern promenade near the old fishing port.
Lined with cafes, bars and restaurants, it really comes alive around sunset and makes for a platinum chip venue for people watching.
