Molde Cruises
Set on the stunning Romsdal Peninsula, Molde is a 10km strip of city on the north shore of the Moldefjord. In the setting of 222 snow capped peaks the scenery is famously described as the Molde panorama. Rugged and stunning, it has been attracting visitors since the 19th century. Molde has many natural attractions in the local area including the dramatic Trollsigen mountain road which was voted the Norwegian construction of the century in 2005. Also the Mardalsfossen waterfall, which is the fourth highest in the world. To the north lies Moldemarka, a hilly woodland area which is public land. It is notable for its many paths, walking and skiing trails. Molde port has long since been important to the marine industry as many of the major maritime companies base themselves at this location. These include Sperre, Rolls-Royce Marine and Glamox. Many of the worlds ship builders also reside at molde and work out of the shipyards in and around the area. Being the gateway to the fjords and mountain ranges of Norway the port of Molde has long since been a port of call for many cruise liners since 1882. The Children folks dance society displays a dance every time a cruise ship docks.
Primarily a medieval town, Molde was a survivor of the Norwegian civil war and the area was the location for the battle of Skakke. The port flourished, thriving on its exports of timber and herring. The port is named either after the farmland of the area, Molde meaning 'fertile soil' or the phrase 'moldr' which means 'skull' or 'mold'. The port gained formal trade rights in 1614 and has had extensive growth in the 18th and 19th century. During the second world war two-thirds of the town was destroyed, however post war Molde has seen a period of fast growth, mainly through tourism.
Famous for its stunning natural beauty and international Jazz festival, Molde has plenty for the visitor to enjoy. For the more adventurous person, Molde is a Mecca for climbing. For example challenges such as the Trollveggen wall or the peak of Romsdalshorn. The many Fjords in the region also makes it popular for fishing and diving.
