Los Angeles Cruises

The Port of Los Angeles, located in San Pedro Bay, occupies 7,500 acres of land and water along 69 kilometres of waterfront. It is around 30 kilometres south of Downtown Los Angeles. The Port offers a range of facilities for passengers, recreation and cargo needs. There are 17 Marinas, a beach nearby, and a regular whale watching expedition.

The port was officially founded in 1907, with the creation of the Board of Harbour Commissioners. It was originally named ‘Bahia de los Fumos’ or ‘Bay of Smokes’ in 1542 by Portuguese explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo. The tidal flats and marshes remained undisturbed for around 200 years. In 1769 Spanish officials prohibited any settlers from doing business with other countries, restricting all trade. However, during this time San Pedro and other nearby towns actually prospered, largely due to a thriving cargo smuggling industry. In 1822 the newly independent Mexican government lifted the restrictions and San Pedro became an established commercial centre.

The worlds largest Lobster Festival is held at The Port of Los Angeles, with discounts on Maine Lobster meals and plenty of entertainment, including; parades, street performers and arts and crafts stands.
