Lombok, a beautiful and lush island, is located in southern Indonesia, inNusatenggara Province. One of the Lesser Sunda Islands, it is locatedeast of Bali across the Lombok Strait. Mountains of volcanic origin onthe island rise to 3,726 meters (12,224 feet) atop Mount Rinjani.Mataram, on the western coast, is the chief settlement, and the nearbyport of Ampenam is the site of Mataram State University (1963). Theindigenous plants and animals are more closely related to Australianforms than to Balinese and Southeast Asian forms. The Dutch annexed theisland in 1894.
