Laguna San Raphael Cruises
Some 150 nautical miles south of Puerto Chacabuco lies Laguna San Rafael. Getting there is in itself a wonderful experience. The ship cruises through waterways, fjords and estuaries that offer the most stunning scenery.
Ships have to anchor some distance from the lagoon. Silversea has chartered a comfortable 90-passenger catamaran that will come alongside the ship, taking guests the last stretch to the laguna. The narrow entrance of the 27-mile-long Laguna San Rafael can only be accomplished by smaller vessels. In addition to a ring of green-clad mountains, the premier attraction is the majestic glacier. It originates at San Valentin Mountain and makes its way gradually toward the water. The jagged ice field of the glacier is part of the Laguna San Rafael National Park, accessible only by air or sea.
The catamaran will drop anchor near the glacier. From this location you may enjoy a close-up view of this awesome ice mass. Watch huge chunks of ice breaking off, crashing into the water. The cracking and calving ice creates a horrendous noise.
After sufficient time to enjoy this breathtaking spectacle and to take photographs, your catamaran will slowly cruise out of the Laguna San Rafael.
Note the small icebergs and chunks of ice scattered across the water; it presents a fascinating kaleidoscope of incredible colors of surreal, translucent blues and greens.
During the approximately 60-minute cruise each way, you will be treated to snacks and drinks. The catamaran offers comfortable seating and outdoor deck areas. It is important that you dress in layers and have warm clothing if you want to spend time outside on deck.
This unique outing is offered complimentary to our guests as a most unusual Silversea Experience.
Due to the limited number the catamaran can accommodate at one time, several departures will be scheduled, with appropriate tickets to be obtained from the Tour Office on board.
Please Note: Due to the remote location there is no other sightseeing option or going ashore possible.
