The great fortified castle still dominates the centre of Kalmar, with its numerous stone turrets and spires, and there is also the great cathedral to marvel at, dating from 1702. However, modern Kalmar is a city exercising its green credentials, with many bicycle lanes and forest walks to be found all around.
