Drnstein Cruises
Durnstein belongs to the most attractive towns of the Wachau region. The town is surrounded by walls that climb all the way up to the ruin of the Kuenringer Castle, towering 150 meters over the town. It was here, that King Richard the Lionheart was allegedly held captive. During the guided tour through the city, you pass many well-kept burgher houses of the 16th through the 18th century as well as the remains of the Klarissin Convent from the 14th century. You visit the former convent church, today a parish church, which was built from 1721 to 1725 (interior tour). The beautiful blue tower can be seen from afar and is one of the most beautiful baroque era towers in Austria and the landmark of the city. In the convent courtyard, you can admire the wonderful main portal, a so-called splendor portal. In the interior of the church, beautiful stucco reliefs, altarpieces and an impressive, decoratively carved pulpit as well as beautiful choir stalls can be found. The baroque cloister is located at the western side of the church. You then enjoy some time at leisure to complete your visit with a stroll through Durnstein. If you wish you can sample typical local wines during a brief wine tasting.
