Luxury expedition cruises to the White Continent

Seabourn’s Antarctica cruises combine the thrill of expedition travel with the comfort and service of an ultra-luxury cruise. Purpose-built for remote exploration, Seabourn Venture and Seabourn Pursuit feature PC6 ice-strengthened hulls, fleets of Zodiacs and kayaks, and an Expedition Team comprising experts in fields such as wildlife, science, photography and history.

Carrying just 264 guests, both ships retain the intimate atmosphere for which Seabourn is renowned. Smaller guest numbers help keep landings uncrowded and allow for a more personal experience, whether you’re cruising past towering icebergs by Zodiac, stepping ashore on the Antarctic Peninsula, or attending one of the daily lectures and briefings led by the Expedition Team.

On board, you’ll enjoy spacious all-suite accommodation, every suite featuring a private veranda, alongside multiple dining venues, premium beverages, attentive service and the all-inclusive experience that defines Seabourn across its wider fleet.

As Seabourn specialists for more than 30 years, we have access to exclusive Antarctica fares and added-value benefits, including onboard credit and savings of up to 20% on selected departures in 2027 and 2028. Several members of our team have sailed to Antarctica with Seabourn, so we can offer first-hand advice on everything from choosing the right itinerary to making the most of your time ashore.

What to expect from a Seabourn Antarctica voyage

A typical day on a Seabourn Antarctica voyage begins with a morning briefing in the Discovery Centre, where the Expedition Team outlines the day’s planned landings, sea conditions and wildlife sightings. Comprised of marine biologists, geologists, polar historians and photographers, the team is one of the highlights of the experience. Nikki, who sailed to Antarctica aboard Seabourn Venture, described their lectures and insights as one of the most rewarding aspects of the voyage.

Most landing days feature two Zodiac excursions, typically one in the morning and another in the afternoon. Some are dedicated shore landings on the Antarctic Peninsula or South Shetland Islands, with locations such as Half Moon Island, Bluff Cove and Paradise Bay regularly appearing on Seabourn itineraries. Others take the form of Zodiac cruises through ice-filled channels and sheltered bays where the ship itself cannot venture.

Kayaking is available as an optional activity for guests who want a quieter, more immersive way to experience Antarctica. Gliding past icebergs and wildlife at water level offers a completely different perspective from that of a Zodiac excursion and is often cited as a highlight by those who take part.

Between landings, Seabourn Venture and Seabourn Pursuit provide a remarkably comfortable base from which to explore. The Constellation Lounge is ideal for wildlife spotting and scenic cruising, while the Discovery Centre hosts daily briefings and enrichment lectures. After a day outdoors, The Spa at Seabourn offers a welcome opportunity to unwind, while dining remains all-inclusive across venues such as The Restaurant, The Colonnade and Patio.

Weather conditions can change dramatically over the course of a single voyage, ranging from calm, blue-sky days to snowstorms and strong winds. Seabourn provides much of the specialist equipment you’ll need, including a Helly Hansen expedition parka and beanie hat to keep, plus waterproof muck boots on loan.

Most guests find a layering system works best, with thermal base layers, insulating mid-layers and a waterproof outer shell worn beneath the supplied parka. Sunglasses and sunscreen are also essential, as the reflection from snow and ice can make the Antarctic sun surprisingly intense. Our guide on what to pack for a Seabourn cruise covers the expedition sailings, so this is a good place to start if you want more information.

Planning your Seabourn Antarctica cruise

The Antarctica season runs from October to March, the only period during which the continent is accessible to expedition ships as sea ice retreats sufficiently to allow safe navigation. During this time, Seabourn typically offers around 20 departures, ranging from 10 to 21 nights.

The timing of your voyage will have a noticeable impact on the experience. Early-season departures in October and November often feature the most dramatic ice formations and pristine snow-covered landscapes. Peak season, from December to February, brings milder temperatures, longer daylight hours and excellent conditions for landings and outdoor activities. Later-season voyages, through February and March, are particularly rewarding for whale watching, as humpback and minke whales gather in Antarctica’s krill-rich waters.

Seabourn’s Antarctica cruises depart from either Buenos Aires or Ushuaia in Argentina, with the Drake Passage crossing forming part of the journey to the White Continent. Steeped in maritime folklore, the Drake Passage takes around two days to cross and can range from remarkably calm conditions, known affectionately as the “Drake Lake”, to the more energetic “Drake Shake”. It has become something of a rite of passage for travellers to Antarctica, and both Seabourn Venture and Seabourn Pursuit are equipped with stabilisers to enhance comfort during the crossing.

Longer itineraries combine Antarctica with the Falkland Islands and South Georgia, extending the voyage to as much as 21 nights. These sailings are particularly rewarding for wildlife enthusiasts, offering opportunities to witness vast king penguin colonies, elephant seals, wandering albatrosses and some of the most spectacular concentrations of wildlife anywhere on Earth.

With a relatively limited number of departures each season, we recommend booking your Seabourn Antarctica cruise 12 to 18 months in advance, particularly if you have a preferred departure date or suite category in mind. Our Voyage Consultants can also assist with flights to Argentina, hotel stays, and pre- or post-cruise arrangements, ensuring every aspect of your Antarctica adventure is taken care of.
