National Geographic - Lindblad Expeditions

Established in 2004 and extended through to 2040, it means every Lindblad voyage includes a certified National Geographic photographer alongside a team of scientists, naturalists and researchers whose expertise is fully integrated into the daily expedition programme. National Geographic’s involvement shapes the onboard enrichment, photography curriculum and conservation focus of every sailing.

Since 1966, when Lars-Eric Lindblad led the first non-scientific tourist voyage to Antarctica. That makes Lindblad the longest-established expedition operator in the world. His son Sven-Olof Lindblad built on that legacy and founded what became Lindblad Expeditions in 1979. The company has operated continuously in Antarctica, the Arctic and the Galapagos ever since.

The programme spans all seven continents across more than 100 itineraries. Core destinations include Antarctica, the Arctic, the Galápagos, Alaska, Patagonia, Baja California and the Amazon. The European programme has expanded in recent years, with sailings in the British Isles, the Mediterranean, Scotland and along the Atlantic coast. The Galapagos programme runs year-round and remains one of Lindblad’s most distinctive offerings.

All meals, Zodiac landings, guided shore excursions, kayaking, guided hikes, enrichment lectures, photography workshops and a complimentary expedition jacket on polar voyages are included. On the newer polar ships, including National Geographic Endurance and Resolution, all alcoholic beverages are included throughout the day. On the coastal and Galapagos fleet, house beer and wine are included with meals, with premium selections available at an additional cost. WiFi, gratuities and pre-voyage hotel stays are included on selected itineraries, while optional excursions beyond the core programme and spa treatments are charged separately.

The two polar flagships are sister ships built to the same specification, each carrying 126 guests across 69 outward-facing cabins with the same X-Bow design, Scandinavian-inspired interiors and expedition facilities. The key difference is the itinerary. Endurance tends to focus on the Arctic and Greenland, while Resolution operates more frequently in Antarctica and Patagonia, though both ships cross between hemispheres across the season. Lindblad is one of the stronger expedition options for families with older children. The Global Explorers programme runs on selected sailings and provides children aged eight and over with a structured mix of wildlife identification, hands-on science and guided exploration. The Galapagos and Alaska programmes, in particular, attract multi-generational groups, combining extraordinary wildlife encounters with an activity level that suits a wide range of ages. There are no dedicated children’s clubs or supervised childcare, so it works best for families who want to explore together.

The fleet varies by region and purpose. The polar flagships, National Geographic Endurance and Resolution, carry 126 guests. The coastal fleet, including National Geographic Venture, Quest and Explorer, carries between 100 and 148 guests. The Galapagos vessels are the most intimate, with National Geographic Islander II carrying 48 guests and National Geographic Endeavour II carrying 96. Smaller ships allow for greater flexibility, faster Zodiac deployment and access to anchorages that larger vessels cannot reach.

Popular itineraries – particularly Antarctica sailings between November and March and Galapagos departures year-round – often book 12 to 18 months in advance.
