Oahu-Hawaii

Hawaii is a destination like no other and the collection of islands was first documented by Captain Cook back in the late 1700s. Before this time, the islands had been home to Polynesian settlers from the Marquesas Islands, who it is believed had inhabited the islands since 300BC. Following Cook’s visit and the publication of several books about the islands, European travellers began to take an interest and soon flocked to Hawaii.

In modern times, Hawaii’s history is etched into everything you see, touch and taste, fused together with a strong North American and Asian influence – it’s a colourful melting pot of culture and one that begs each and every visitor to explore its deepest beating heart, and there are more than enough island for you to explore.

Oahu (Honolulu)

Oahu is home to Honolulu, Hawaii’s capital city, and it’s also where you will find the world famous Waikiki Beach, located on the south shore of the island. Many important cultural monuments can also be found in Honolulu, including the Aloha Tower which first opened on September 11 1926. You can find the Aloha Tower (lighthouse) at Pier 9 in Honolulu Harbour. The islands two extinct volcanoes are also a regular attraction for visitors: the Diamond Head and the Punchbowl. Oahu is also the home of Pearl Harbour, an absolute must-visit for anyone interested in history. Pearl Harbour offers four museums dedicated to the United States’ naval history.

Lahaina

Lahaina is another popular call for cruise ships in Hawaii and here you will find a rich Polynesian history surrounded by natural beauty, and a few modern twists. Some of Hawaii’s best restaurants can be found in Lahaina and a stroll along Front Street – voted One of the “Top 10 Greatest Streets” by the American Planning Association – is an absolute must. From 1820 to 1845, Lahaina was the capital of the Kingdom of Hawaii and this deep history is evident all around. If you happen to visit during Halloween, then you are in for a real treat as the town hosts one of the largest Halloween parties in Hawaii – dubbed the “Mardi Gras of the Pacific”.

Kahului (Maui)

In Kahului you will find a superb National park that offers incredible views from look-out points located over 6500 feet above sea level. This destination also boasts the Alexander and Baldwin Sugar Museum, Kahana Pond State Wildlife Sanctuary and the Kahana Beach Country Park. Even though there are some wonderful attractions in Kahului, it’s not considered one of the main tourist locations in Hawaii.

Hilo

Hilo is one of the most popular places to visit in Hawaii and with so much on offer, it’s no wonder why. You can fill your time here with a bit of everything: Rainbow Falls, Imiloa Astronomy Center, Liliuokalani Park and Gardens, Pacific Tsunami Museum and the Kuamana Caves. Coconut Island is also very popular and is located in Hilo Bay. It is said that the first inhabitants of the island arrived in 1100AD, bringing with them an abundance of Polynesian knowledge and traditions, but archaeological evidence is scarce and history actually has people living in Hilo during the time of ancient Hawaii – pre-1810.
