Bermuda Cruises

The beautiful island of Bermuda is situated in the North Atlantic Ocean, off the east coast of the United States. In reality, there are 140 islands that make up The Bermudas, but only 20 of them are inhabited.

Named after the Spanish sea captain Juan de Bermúdez, who discovered the island in 1505, Bermuda became part of the Spanish Empire. Having later been settled by British colonists as an extension of the Virginia Company, which brought settlements to Virginia and Jamestown in the New World, Bermuda formally became a British colony in 1707. Bermuda is today the oldest and most populated overseas British territory, and a popular port of call for various luxury cruise lines including Silversea Cruises, Oceania Cruises, Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Windstar Cruises.

Bermuda Cruise Ports

Bermuda offers three main ports. The King’s Warf is found on the north-western tip of the island and is the most popular port for larger cruise ships. Hamilton Harbour, the second port, is located within walking distance of Bermuda’s capital city, Hamilton. Ideally positioned, but smaller than the King’s Warf dock, the terminal accepts small to medium-sized ships. The third and smallest port is St George’sHarbour on the northeast tip of Bermuda. Less busy than the other two ports, St George’s welcomes passengers of smaller cruise ships to the idyllic island.

Popular attractions on the island include the Bermuda Aquarium, Natural History Museum and Zoo, a perfect opportunity to learn about the Bermuda’s past and its abundance of wildlife. Alternatively, step back in time at Fort Hamilton, an imposing 19th Century fortress which even boasts an on site Victorian Tea Room from which visitors can order a traditional picnic lunch, complete with a blanket and umbrella.

For those on cruises looking to pick up locally produced goods, a trip to the Bermuda Arts Centre, opened in the early 1980s by Princess Margaret, will find visitors with a wide choice of local craft items made by regional artists. Expect a variety of everything from wood-carved items to jewellery created by Bermudian designers.

Things to do on a Bermuda cruise

Bermuda has some fantastic sights for cruise travellers to enjoy, but these are not only architectural landmarks. Those looking for a more relaxing day on the island may prefer a trip to Horseshoe Bay. A trip to the bay will provide the opportunity to experience for yourself the famous pink sand beaches of Bermuda. One of the most popular public beaches on Bermuda, Horseshoe Bay is also a social hotspot and perfect for soaking up both the sun and the island’s atmosphere.

For a quieter picturesque beach visit, Mangrove Bay has lots to offer. A former smugglers’ cove, the bay boasts calm waters and the nearby Somerset Village for facilities. The beach is also a favourite location for landscape artists, all down to the area’s distinct beauty.
