Helen Mirren Announced As Scenic Eclipse Godmother

Scenic has appointed Oscar-winning actress Dame Helen Mirren as the Godmother of its new luxury expedition ship, Scenic Eclipse.

The appointment has been made in advance of the 228-capacity ship’s christening, which will take place in New York City on 10th September 2019 and follows the successful completion of the vessels sea trials in June.

The position of Godmother is a traditional maritime role which will see Dame Helen Mirren responsible for the ceremonial breaking of a champagne bottle against the ship’s hull during the christening.

Scenic’s founder and CEO, Glen Moroney, stated that Dame Helen Mirren was chosen as Godmother because her “style, beauty and spirit of adventure” closely mirrored the design and ethos of Scenic Eclipse, before adding that she is the perfect actress to “figuratively preside over the ship and bring good fortune”.

A star of stage and screen, Dame Helen Mirren was born in London and began her career with the Royal Shakespeare Company in the late 1960s. In 2006 she received an Academy Award for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in The Queen and is noted for her charity work which has seen her support Oxfam, the British Heart Foundation and the National Literacy Trust.

Commenting on her appointment, the actress said:

“I am very honoured to be chosen as the Godmother to such a beautiful vessel as Scenic Eclipse. She will have many adventures and a wonderful life as she transports her guests in immaculate style and great safety to beautiful places”.

Following her christening, Scenic Eclipse will commence her service with a voyage from New York to Halifax before embarking on a maiden season which features itineraries in Central America, Antarctica, Europe and the Arctic.
