Cunard 175th Anniversary Celebrations Begin In Southampton
Sunday May 3 was a big day for Cunard, as the Masters of all three vessels mustered by the funnel of Queen Mary 2 ahead of a spectacular sailaway to mark the start of Cunard’s 175 year anniversary celebrations.
Queen Elizabeth, Queen Victoria and Queen Mary 2 each returned from their World Cruises, arriving into Southampton early on Sunday morning under a blanket of typical British cloud. Hundreds of people gathered to welcome the three Queen’s back home and thankfully, as the day wore on, the weather began to break, giving way to much better conditions for what has to be one of the best cruise ship photographs of 2015 thus far.
Once the perfect shot was obtained, each of the masters took command of their respective ships and for the first time the fleet sailed together in daylight from Cunard’s homeport of Southampton led by Queen Mary 2.
Commodore Christopher Rynd, Master of Queen Victoria, was joined on the distinctive red funnel that characterises all three ships by Captain Chris Wells, Master of Queen Mary 2 and Captain Inger Klein Thorhauge, Master of Queen Elizabeth and Cunard’s first ever female Captain.
The weather was left than perfect for the event, but it didn’t stop people from gathering to bid all three Queen’s farewell and photograph the momentous occasion.
The celebrations will continue when Queen Victoria, Queen Elizabeth and Queen Mary 2 visit Liverpool at the end of this month. During May 24-26 2015, the River Mersey will host a fantastic water ballet by the iconic cruise ships as part of the Cunard 175 year celebrations. Thousands of people are expected to attend for what will be a historic event honouring the birth of Cunard in Liverpool.
