Celebrity Cruises To Buy Maine Lobster

Celebrity Cruises is the second cruise line to agree to purchase fresh lobster when in the state of Maine.

The line has agreed to buy approximately 4000lbs of lobster the next time the 2000-guest capacity Celebrity Summit visits Maine’s primary port of Bar Harbour. This news follows a similar announcement made by Holland America earlier in the week, who it is reported will buy their first quantity of fresh lobster when the Maasdam arrives in the state on Friday.

Maine is currently experiencing a rich harvest of lobster, with the volume being caught far outweighing the usual seasonal demand. This has meant that the fishermen and local suppliers have had to accept much lower prices for their catches in an attempt to shift some of the stock.

Traditionally, cruise lines have purchased frozen lobster due to long-term contracts and accessibility. However, in a concerted effort to aid burden, the US Rep. Chellie Pingree, alongside the Maine Lobster Promotion Council, has written to 15 lines in total with a view to offering them the opportunity to purchase the fresh produce the next time they visit Maine’s Bar Harbour. So far, only Celebrity and Holland America have taken up the offer, but it is Pingree has reported that a third line has requested a sample of the product before making a decision.
