Best expedition cruise destinations

Exploring the world’s furthest corners has never been so accessible. While Antarctica and the Arctic often take the plaudits as the world’s top expedition cruise destinations, an extraordinary variety of regions awaits exploration. Consider the Galapagos or the Kimberley for something entirely different, or experience another side of Alaska, venturing beyond the traditional big-ship routes to discover its wilderness on a much more intimate scale.

What is an Expedition Cruise

What is an expedition cruise? What you need to know

An expedition cruise puts the destination front and centre, unlike traditional cruising, where the ship can sometimes come first. Expedition ships are often smaller, carrying fewer than 200 guests, which allows them to reach places larger vessels simply can’t. Depending on where you choose to explore, you’ll spend your days ashore or on the water, with sightseeing trips and landings often made by Zodiac rather than a traditional tender boat. Time ashore opens up an incredible range of experiences: hike towards glacial peaks, walk among penguin colonies, explore Aboriginal caves and encounter native wildlife in its natural habitat.

What really sets an expedition cruise apart, though, is the expertise onboard. Your expedition team will typically include specialists such as marine biologists, geologists and historians who know these regions intimately and accompany you throughout the voyage. Alongside guiding excursions ashore, they’ll host briefings, seminars and lectures that provide context to everything you’re seeing. On an expedition cruise, you won’t simply ‘see’ a destination; you’ll come away with a much greater understanding of it.

If there’s one thing you need to know before choosing an expedition cruise, it’s that finding the right ship is more important than finding the ‘best’ ship. Guest capacity, ice class, and even the number of Zodiacs carried onboard can noticeably affect your experience, particularly in destinations such as Antarctica and the Galápagos. The right choice ultimately depends on where you want to go, what you want to experience and how you want to travel.

What is included with an Expedition Cruise

What's included on an expedition cruise?

For your convenience, an expedition cruise will often include more than a standard sailing. As you might expect, luxury lines often include much more in the fare, leaving little to pay for once you’re onboard. Importantly, most excursions are included in the fare, so Zodiac landings and the expedition team’s expertise come standard rather than as optional extras. Furthermore, by booking an expedition cruise with The Cruise Line, we can arrange your flights, hotels, and transfers around your voyage, bringing everything together under one ATOL-protected booking.

Depending on your operator and itinerary, here’s what you can expect:

  • Charter flights to remote embarkation points included on selected polar voyages.
  • Pre-cruise hotel accommodation where required by the itinerary.
  • Zodiac excursions and shore landings led by the expedition team.
  • Daily lectures and briefings from naturalists, scientists, and other specialists.
  • Expedition parkas and waterproof boot hire on many polar voyages.
  • Accommodation, dining, drinks, gratuities, and Wi-Fi on many luxury expedition lines.
  • Dedicated support from The Cruise Line team before you travel and while you’re away.
