What to Pack on a Seabourn Cruise

What to pack on a Seabourn cruise: The full guide
Packing for a Seabourn voyage requires a different mindset than preparing for a standard cruise. There is no need to over-pack "just in case" items because the environment on board is one of understated, intuitive luxury. You aren't just packing for a holiday; you are packing for a private club where the staff already know your name and your favourite drink. The key to the Seabourn aesthetic is "Elegant Casual". It is a look that feels expensive but never tries too hard. Whether you are sailing through the Greek Isles on Seabourn Encore or navigating the Lemaire Channel on Seabourn Venture, this guide covers the practicalities of what you actually need in your suitcase. The Seabourn dress code: Day and night
Seabourn transitioned to a more flexible dress code in recent years, reflecting the way its guests live at home. Although the standard for almost every evening is Elegant Casual.

Daytime attire
During the day, the vibe is refined resort wear. Think linens, shorts, and polo shirts. While you will see guests in swimwear around the pool or at The Patio, you must wear a cover-up or shirt when moving through the indoor lounges or the Colonnade for lunch.
Jeans are perfectly acceptable during the day in all venues. However, after 6pm, the atmosphere shifts.
Evening: Elegant casual
After 6pm, the shorts and T-shirts disappear. For men, this means trousers (chino style or tailored) paired with a collared shirt or a refined sweater. A jacket is entirely optional and, on many warm-weather itineraries, rarely seen. For women, the evening look consists of sundresses, skirts, or tailored trousers with a silk blouse.
“Elegant jeans” are now permitted in all dining venues after 6pm. This means dark, well-fitted denim without fraying or holes. If you choose to wear jeans, pair them with loafers or smart flats to keep the look cohesive.
Formal optional evenings
On cruises of 13 days or fewer, there is typically one “Formal Optional” evening. On longer voyages, there may be two or three.
In the restaurant: This is the only venue where the formal code is enforced. Men are required to wear a tuxedo, suit, or a jacket with slacks (a tie is never mandatory). Women should opt for cocktail dresses or evening gowns.
Elsewhere on board: If you prefer not to dress up, every other dining venue (including Earth & Ocean and The Colonnade) remains Elegant Casual. You can enjoy a world-class meal without ever putting on a tie.
Packing for Seabourn expeditions (Antarctica & The Arctic)
Packing for a polar expedition on Seabourn Venture or Seabourn Pursuit is a different task entirely. The focus here is utility and safety. If you want to read a first-hand account of what to expect, our Seabourn Venture Antarctica review covers the full experience in detail.

What Seabourn provides
Do not waste suitcase space on heavy outerwear. Seabourn provides the following to all expedition guests:
A Helly Hansen PolarShield parka: This is a high-spec, two-in-one waterproof jacket with a removable insulator. It is yours to keep.
Waterproof boots: These are provided on a loan basis for the duration of the cruise. They are professional-grade and designed for “wet landings” where you step out of a Zodiac into calf-deep water.
A waterproof backpack: Crucial for keeping your camera gear dry during skiff tours.
What you must bring
You are responsible for your base and mid-layers. The “three-layer” rule is non-negotiable in Antarctica:
Base layer: Moisture-wicking thermal tops and bottoms (merino wool is best).
Mid-layer: Fleece or wool jumpers to trap heat.
Outer layer: Waterproof trousers are mandatory for Zodiac landings. They must be wide enough at the ankle to fit over the provided boots. Avoid Velcro fasteners as they can snag on expedition gear.
The same principles apply if you are sailing to the Arctic, where Seabourn Venture also operates in summer months.

Suite amenities and practicalities
Seabourn suites are exceptionally well-equipped, meaning you can leave the bulkier essentials at home.
Toiletries: You do not need to pack shampoo or body wash. Every suite is stocked with bespoke Molton Brown products, including two exclusive Seabourn Signature scents: Immersive Samphire & Eucalyptus and Inspiring Basil & Vetiver.
Hair dryers: Each suite features a powerful, professional-grade hair dryer (usually tucked away in the vanity or walk-in wardrobe). You do not need to bring your own travel version.
Laundry: There is a complimentary self-service launderette on board, which is particularly useful on longer voyages or after dusty excursions. Dry cleaning and pressing services are also available for a fee.
Prohibited items
To maintain safety and the serene atmosphere on board, certain items are strictly forbidden:
Drones: No Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are allowed on board.
Heat-producing appliances: Clothing irons and kettles are prohibited in suites due to fire risks.
Large blades: Scissors or knives with blades longer than 4 inches (approx. 10cm) will be confiscated at the gangway.
Illegal substances: This includes CBD products, regardless of their legal status in your home country.
