Silversea Packing & Dress Code Guide

March 2026

The Silversea Style Guide: Effortless Packing and Dress Code Essentials

There is a moment, usually somewhere around your second Silversea voyage, when you realise you packed far too much. The suites on ships like Silver Muse and Silver Nova are truly spacious, your butler will unpack for you, and the laundry service means you can travel lighter than you think. Most first-timers overpack; this Silversea cruise packing list and dress code guide is here to help you avoid that mistake. The honest starting point is this: Silversea takes care of more than most people expect. Toiletries, beach towels, and hair dryers are all provided in the suite. What you actually need in your Silversea cruise packing list is refined eveningwear, practical daywear, and comfortable shoes tailored for effortless exploration in port.

Eveningwear

Most seven-night sailings include a mix of casual, smart-casual, and a couple of formal evenings. One formal outfit covers it, and a few smart casual options fill the rest of the week. Silversea guests generally dress up more than on mainstream lines, but a well-cut dark suit is always perfectly appropriate on a formal night if black tie is not your preference.

Daywear and Port Days

Lightweight layers are the sensible choice for Mediterranean and Baltic itineraries. Temperatures shift more than people expect between a morning on deck and an afternoon in a medieval city centre. Comfortable, closed-toe shoes are ideal. In ports like Dubrovnik or Lisbon, you are covering steep, uneven stone streets. Here, good shoes matter considerably more than a third pair of heels.

What the Ship Provides

Silversea suites are stocked with Bulgari or Bamford toiletries, depending on which ship you are on, so there is no need to pack a full wash bag. Hair dryers are also in all suites. Beach towels are provided poolside and for shore excursions. Your butler can arrange pressing through the laundry service, which means no need to pack an iron. In fact, packing one is not permitted.

What to Leave at Home

  • Irons and clothes steamers (not permitted in cabins; laundry pressing is available onboard)
  • Beach towels
  • Extension cords without surge protection
  • Large amounts of your own alcohol (wine, spirits, and soft drinks are all included as part of Silversea’s all-inclusive fare)

The official Silversea dress code is described as elegant casual to formal. In practice, it breaks down by evening, and your daily programme delivered to your suite each night tells you exactly what the following day requires.

Casual Evenings

Smart trousers and a collared shirt for men. Dresses, skirts, or tailored trousers for women. Shorts and T-shirts are not appropriate in dining venues after 6pm.

Smart Casual Evenings

The most common setting across most itineraries. A blazer and trousers, or a cocktail dress. This is what most guests wear for the majority of the voyage, and what to wear on Silversea if you are only bringing a limited wardrobe.

Formal Evenings

Typically, these occur once or twice per week on sailings of seven nights or more. Black tie is the standard, and a dark lounge suit is always accepted. Some guests take formal nights very seriously, others wear a well-pressed suit. The choice is yours.

During the Day

On deck and at the Pool Grill, resort wear is appropriate. Swimwear and cover-ups are fine in those settings. Most guests change before heading into the main ship interior for lunch.

Prohibited Items on Silversea

The prohibited items on Silversea follow standard maritime safety regulations. The ones most relevant when packing are:

  • Irons and clothes steamers
  • Candles and incense
  • Personal drones (require prior written approval and are generally not permitted near ports or protected areas)
  • Firearms (separate protocols apply for Silversea expedition voyages)
  • Recreational drugs
  • Extension cords without surge protection

If you are travelling with medical equipment or mobility aids, contact Silversea before departure. These are accommodated, but some items need to be flagged in advance.

Preparing for a Silversea Antarctica Cruise

Antarctica sailings are a different proposition from the rest of the Silversea fleet, and knowing what changes before you pack matters. Silver Wind, Silver Cloud, and Silver Endeavour are purpose-built and adapted for polar expedition travel. The atmosphere onboard is more practical and considerably less formal than a Mediterranean voyage.

Silversea provides expedition parkas and rubber boots for all guests, which are yours to keep. You do not need to source your own outer layers for Zodiac landings, though thermal base layers and fleece mid-layers are worth bringing yourself.

Formal nights do not feature on most Antarctica itineraries. Smart casual covers evening dining. Many guests spend the majority of the day in thermals and expedition wear, changing for dinner and little else.

One thing that catches people out: some Antarctic sailings depart from Ushuaia, Argentina, requiring an international connecting flight. Build in at least one overnight buffer before embarkation. A missed departure in Ushuaia has no easy solution. Browse our current Silversea deals to explore Antarctica and expedition itineraries.
