Swan Hellenic vs HX Expeditions vs Ponant: Which expedition line is right for you?
February 2026

Ship size and atmosphere
This is where the three lines diverge most clearly, and it directly affects your experience.
Swan Hellenic operates three purpose-built sister ships carrying between 152 and 192 guests. These are boutique vessels with Scandinavian-designed interiors, natural wood, muted tones, and a quiet, understated atmosphere. The crew-to-guest ratio is around 1:1.2, which means service is highly personal. There are no formal evenings, no entertainment shows, and no casino. The focus is on the destination, the expedition team, and the people you’re travelling with. On a ship this size, you get to know fellow passengers quickly, and the atmosphere tends to feel more like a private voyage than a cruise.
HX Expeditions’ fleet brings a different energy. Ships like MS Fridtjof Nansen and MS Roald Amundsen carry around 500 guests, while the older MS Fram and MS Spitsbergen carry around 250–335 guests. The atmosphere is more active and social, with a Science Centre as the hub of the onboard experience. These are well-designed, modern ships with a Norwegian sensibility, and the larger scale means more onboard facilities, more fellow travellers to meet, and a busier programme of activities. For many people, that sense of shared adventure is exactly what makes an expedition memorable.
Ponant sits somewhere in between, though it varies widely across the fleet. The six Explorer-class ships carry around 184 guests, which is comparable to Swan Hellenic’s SH Diana. The four older Sisterships (Le Boréal, L’Austral, Le Soléal, Le Lyrial) carry up to 264. And then there’s Le Commandant Charcot, the world’s only luxury icebreaker, carrying around 245 guests to the geographic North Pole and deep Antarctic waters that no other commercial ship can reach. The atmosphere on Ponant is distinctly French: elegant, refined, and with a culinary focus that genuinely sets it apart from the rest of the expedition market.
In short: Swan Hellenic is the smallest and most intimate. HX Expeditions is the largest and most adventure-focused. Ponant offers French elegance on ships that range from boutique to mid-sized, with Le Commandant Charcot in a league of its own.
What's included
This is one of the areas where the three lines differ most, and it’s worth understanding the details before comparing headline fares.
Swan Hellenic fares cover all meals, 24-hour room service, beer, wine, spirits, and soft drinks throughout the day; one shore excursion per port; all Zodiac landings; lectures; standard Wi-Fi; self-service laundry; onboard gratuities; and port taxes. In polar regions, Cruise Plus packages also include charter flights to remote embarkation ports, airport-to-ship transfers, one night’s pre-cruise hotel accommodation, a branded expedition parka (yours to keep), and rubber boots. There’s very little left to pay for beyond optional kayaking, premium Wi-Fi, spa treatments, and private tours.
HX Expeditions made a significant move in late 2024 by shifting to an all-inclusive model across its expedition fleet. Fares now cover meals, drinks (excluding premium options), daily excursions and activities, the Science Centre, gratuities, and more. This was a major step that brought HX firmly into all-inclusive territory and represents strong value, particularly on longer itineraries. Flights to embarkation ports, pre-cruise hotels, and transfers are generally available as add-on packages. A parka and boots are provided in polar regions.
Ponant’s fare includes all dining, beverages throughout the day (including Champagne, which is a genuinely generous touch), unlimited Wi-Fi, and port taxes. The onboard experience is comprehensive and reflects Ponant’s luxury positioning. Shore excursions are charged separately on most voyages, which gives you flexibility to choose exactly what interests you rather than following a set programme. On polar expeditions, a parka and boots are provided. Flights, transfers, and pre-cruise accommodation are typically booked separately.
In short: Swan Hellenic bundles the most into the fare for polar voyages, including flights, transfers, and hotels. HX Expeditions’ new all-inclusive model represents a significant improvement in value across the fleet. Ponant’s inclusion of Champagne and unlimited Wi-Fi reflects its luxury positioning, with the flexibility to tailor your excursion programme.

Destinations
All three lines operate in Antarctica and the Arctic, but the range beyond that varies.
Swan Hellenic focuses on off-the-beaten-track cultural expedition cruising. Alongside polar voyages, the fleet sails to West Africa, South America, and, from 2026, a new Asia-Pacific programme covering the Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea, Raja Ampat, the Philippines, and Japan. Swan Hellenic tends to visit ports and coastlines that other lines don’t reach, and many itineraries feature maiden calls to destinations no cruise ship has visited before. If you want to go somewhere genuinely unusual, Swan Hellenic is often the strongest option.
HX Expeditions covers the broadest expedition range. The fleet sails to Antarctica, the Arctic (including Svalbard, Greenland, Iceland, and the Northwest Passage), Alaska, Norway, the Galápagos, the British Isles, and Europe. Norway is HX Expeditions’ heartland, and the brand’s heritage here stretches back over 130 years. The Ultimate Norway itineraries and Northern Lights Promise (a future cruise credit if the aurora doesn’t appear) are unique to HX and genuinely compelling. If Alaska, the Galápagos, or the Norwegian coast are on your list, HX Expeditions offers options that the other two lines simply don’t.
Ponant has the widest overall destination portfolio thanks to its larger fleet. Beyond polar regions, Ponant sails extensively in the Mediterranean, Caribbean, Asia, the South Pacific, and tropical waters. The warm-weather programme is far more developed than either Swan Hellenic or HX Expeditions, and Le Commandant Charcot opens up extreme polar destinations, including the geographic North Pole, that are completely inaccessible to any other commercial vessel. If you want a mix of expedition and more traditional luxury cruising across different seasons, Ponant’s range is unmatched.
In short: Swan Hellenic for remote, culturally rich destinations others don’t visit. HX Expeditions for the broadest expedition range, including Alaska, the Galapagos, and its unrivalled Norwegian heritage. Ponant for the widest overall portfolio, from the Med to the North Pole.

Enrichment and expedition teams
Swan Hellenic’s identity is rooted in cultural expedition cruising, dating back to the 1950s when the original company arranged voyages to Greece with university scholars onboard. Today, every voyage carries a dedicated expedition team of historians, naturalists, and regional specialists. The SETI Institute partnership places NASA-affiliated scientists on ten voyages in 2026. Photojournalism at Sea and citizen science programmes add further depth. The approach is intellectually serious but never stuffy. Lectures connect directly to the places you’re about to visit, giving you context before you step ashore.
HX Expeditions centres its enrichment around the onboard Science Centre, a genuinely impressive space with interactive displays, a library, and dedicated areas for photography and biology workshops. The expedition team leads landings, lectures, and citizen science projects, including contributions to NASA cloud research and marine biodiversity studies. HX Expeditions has also partnered with Monty Halls, the British marine biologist and broadcaster, for selected voyages. The emphasis is on natural science, conservation, and hands-on adventure, and the Science Centre gives it a physical home onboard that the other two lines don’t have in the same way.
Ponant partners with the Smithsonian Institution on selected sailings, placing expert lecturers in fields like archaeology, history, and science onboard. The enrichment programme draws on world-class external expertise, and Ponant’s approach leans toward curated cultural experiences and gastronomy alongside expedition content. The Ducasse Conseil culinary partnership brings a unique gastronomic dimension to the expedition market. On the Explorer-class ships, the Blue Eye underwater lounge adds a sensory experience you genuinely won’t find anywhere else.
In short: Swan Hellenic for deep cultural and scientific enrichment woven into the itinerary. HX Expeditions for hands-on science, conservation, and the best dedicated Science Centre at sea. Ponant for curated cultural and gastronomic experiences with world-class institutional partnerships.
Price
Pricing varies significantly by itinerary, ship, cabin category, and time of booking, so direct comparisons are only useful as a general guide.
Swan Hellenic typically starts at around £5,000–£9,000 per person for Antarctic voyages, with shorter itineraries in other regions starting at lower prices. The all-inclusive nature of the fare, particularly on polar Cruise Plus packages, means the price you see at booking is close to the final cost.
HX Expeditions often has the most accessible headline fares for Antarctic expedition cruising, with regular promotions and savings of up to several thousand pounds per person. The new all-inclusive model means fewer surprises on board, and the range of ship sizes and itinerary lengths gives you more flexibility to find something within your budget. HX Expeditions frequently represents the best entry point into expedition cruising.
Ponant positions itself at the premium end of the market. Fares tend to be higher, reflecting the French luxury positioning, smaller Explorer-class ships, and the culinary programme. Le Commandant Charcot voyages command a significant premium, justified by the fact that it’s the only vessel of its kind in the world. Ponant does offer zero single supplement on selected sailings, which is a genuine benefit for solo travellers that neither Swan Hellenic nor HX Expeditions regularly match.
In short: HX Expeditions is generally the most affordable and often the best entry point. Swan Hellenic’s all-inclusive fare means the headline price is close to the total cost. Ponant is the premium brand and delivers a distinct luxury experience, with a solo-friendly pricing advantage on selected voyages.

Which line suits you?
Choose Swan Hellenic if you want the most intimate expedition experience and destinations that go beyond the usual circuit. It suits travellers who value intellectual enrichment, personal service, and ships small enough that every landing feels like a private excursion. If this is your first expedition cruise and you want everything taken care of, or if you’re an experienced traveller looking for somewhere genuinely new, Swan Hellenic is a strong choice.
Choose HX Expeditions for the widest range of expedition destinations, a vibrant, social atmosphere, and competitive pricing. HX suits travellers who are drawn to the adventurous side of expedition cruising, who enjoy a busy programme of science-led activities, and who want options such as Alaska, the Galápagos, or Norway’s coast that the other two lines don’t cover. With over 130 years of polar heritage, there’s a depth of experience here that’s hard to overstate.
Choose Ponant if French culture, gastronomy, and elegance matter to you as much as the destination. Ponant suits well-travelled couples and solo travellers who want expedition cruising with a luxury-hotel feel and a culinary programme that rivals the best restaurants ashore. If you’re interested in extreme polar exploration, Le Commandant Charcot offers access to places no other passenger vessel can reach. And if you want to mix expedition voyages with warmer-weather cruising across the Med or the South Pacific, Ponant’s fleet and itinerary range make that seamless.
