AmaWaterways Launches AmaMagdalena: A New Era in River Cruising

AmaWaterways has launched AmaMagdalena, its first luxury river ship on Colombia's Magdalena River. This milestone event occurred on Saturday, 12th April 2025, marking a significant leap for AmaWaterways and Colombian tourism. This expansion broadens AmaWaterways' portfolio beyond Europe, Asia, and Africa, offering new horizons for cruise guests.

Pioneering Colombian Exploration

Co-founder and CEO of AmaWaterways, Rudi Schreiner, said, "Our expansion into Colombia represents a new chapter for AmaWaterways and the world of river cruising. We are proud to be the first major river cruise line to explore the Magdalena River, a region that until now has been largely inaccessible. AmaMagdalena opens the door to a culturally rich destination, and we've worked closely with local communities to ensure our presence benefits everyone involved - from our guests to the people who call this river home."

About AmaMagdalena

AmaMagdalena, designed by Colombian craftsmen, accommodates 60 guests, capturing the region's essence. Architect Camilo Restrepo's design highlights the natural beauty, with staterooms crafted by Marianna Schlegel Donado featuring AmaWaterways' twin-balcony layout. Cartagena's Ocean Projects added local craftsmanship to the ship's woodwork. Guests enjoy amenities like a sun deck pool, fitness room, and dining options such as Latin American cuisine in the main restaurant and al fresco dining.

Colombian Itineraries

Two seven-night itineraries, 'Magic of Colombia' and 'Wonders of Colombia,' run between Barranquilla and Cartagena. Unique cultural experiences include private events at Barranquilla Carnival, heritage tours, and jazz performances in Mompox. Optional land packages in Medellín, Cartagena, and Panama City complement the cruise. Cruise prices start from £4,255 per person, including savings, flights, transfers, dining, drinks, sailaway cocktails, and selected excursions.

Celebrating Cultural Connections

The co-founder and chief brand ambassador of AmaWaterways, Kristin Karst said, "The launch of AmaMagdalena is more than bringing our guests to a new destination — it's about creating lasting connections between cultures, celebrating the rich history and natural beauty of the Magdalena River, and offering new opportunities for local communities. We've seen locals lining the riverbanks, waving and cheering with joy as they see AmaMagdalena. It's a moment of pride, unity, and shared celebration for us and the communities along this majestic river."

The Expansion

AmaWaterways' growth in Colombia, supported by ProColombia and local partners, promotes responsible tourism and community involvement. Training programs and partnerships with local leaders aim to benefit riverside communities while preserving cultural and ecological balance.

The Future of AmaWaterways

The President of ProColombia, Carmen Caballero, said, "The launch of AmaWaterways operations in Colombia marks a new chapter for our tourism. It is not only a sign of trust in our country but also an opportunity to show the world why Colombia is a country of beauty. The Magdalena River will become a showcase of our traditions, biodiversity, and hospitality." Towards the end of this year, AmaWaterways will introduce AmaMelodia, marking the second river cruise ship to operate on the Magdalena River and further strengthening the company's presence in Colombia.
