Silversea vs Other Luxury Cruise Lines: Is It Worth the Money?

Silversea vs Seabourn
Of all the comparisons, this is the hardest call. The lines are closely matched. Both carry a few hundred guests per sailing, both have butler service throughout, and both attract a similar guest profile. Guests who have sailed both often describe the difference in atmosphere rather than product.
The Atmosphere
Seabourn has a slightly more open, social feel onboard. Conversations start easily in public spaces and the overall tone is warm and unpretentious. Silversea is quieter and more refined, particularly on older ships like Silver Spirit. Neither is better. If you want to come back from a cruise having made new friends, Seabourn probably edges it. If you want to be left in peace with excellent service, Silversea suits that preference well.
The Dining
Seabourn’s partnership with Thomas Keller is the standout differentiator on the newer ships. The restaurant bearing his name brings a level of culinary credibility that is beyond the ordinary in cruising. Silversea counters with S.A.L.T., which is a different proposition entirely, less about fine dining prestige and more about connecting the food to the places you are visiting. Both approaches work. The right one depends on what you want from dinner.
The Expedition Question
Seabourn added expedition ships in 2022 and 2023, but Silversea has been running polar itineraries for considerably longer and operates more dedicated expedition vessels. If Antarctica or the Arctic is part of your thinking, Silversea’s depth of experience in those environments is a meaningful advantage.
Silversea vs Regent Seven Seas
The Regent Seven Seas comparison comes down to a few specific questions. How important are included shore excursions? Does suite size at the entry level matter to you? And, are you likely to want expedition travel at any point?
Shore Excursions
This is Regent’s strongest argument. Shore excursions are included in the Regent fare at no extra cost. On a ten-night Mediterranean sailing with excursions at seven or eight ports, that inclusion changes the value calculation considerably. Silversea prices excursions separately on ocean itineraries. Suite Size
Regent’s entry-level Veranda Suites are around 300 square feet. Silversea’s Classic Veranda Suites start at around 280. The difference is noticeable but not dramatic. Where Regent pulls ahead is at the higher categories, where the suites on Seven Seas Grandeur and Seven Seas Splendor are genuinely among the most spacious in luxury cruising.
Where Silversea Wins
Regent does not have an expedition fleet. If you want to sail Antarctica or remote polar regions on a purpose-built ship with an established expedition team, Silversea is the line. There is no equivalent option on Regent. For guests whose travel plans extend beyond standard ocean itineraries, that matters.
Is Silversea Worth the Money?
The fares are high. That is simply true. But the more useful question is whether the all-in cost, once you account for what is included, is actually more than comparable options when priced honestly.
Drinks, dining, gratuities, Wi-Fi, butler service, and laundry are all included on Silversea. On lines where those are priced separately, the advertised fare can look lower while the final cost lands in a similar place. The Silversea all-inclusive model removes most of the additions that accumulate on other ships.
Where Silversea earns its price most clearly is in the destinations it reaches and the level of personal service onboard. A butler who knows your preferences by day two, a ship small enough that staff recognise you by name, and access to ports that larger ships cannot reach. These things are difficult to put a precise number on, but guests who have experienced them rarely question the value on the second voyage.
