Hurtigruten To Celebrate 130 Years of Coastal Cruising

March 14, 2022  |  Share:

Hurtigruten has announced a unique onboard programme on a series of 2023 voyages to mark the 130th anniversary of its inaugural Coastal Express sailing.

As part of the celebrations, guests sailing on selected Coastal Express voyages will have the opportunity to learn more about Hurtigruten’s historical links to the region and enjoy themed cuisine and purchase limited-edition merchandise.

The inaugural Coastal Express – captained by Hurtigruten founder Richard With – set sail from Trondheim on 2nd July 1893 aboard the steamship DS Vesteraalen. Providing a vital link between Norway’s southern and northern regions, Hurtigruten used the route to carry out communications and cargo up and down the coastline, joining communities together in a way that had not been possible previously.

In its current guise, the Coastal Express operated by Hurtigruten still performs many similar functions to that of 130 years ago; however, the route has also found favour with cruise guests looking to discover coastal Norway up close. The most popular itinerary is Hurtigruten’s 12-day Classic Round Voyage from Bergen, with short breaks of 5 or 6 days between Bergen and Kirkenes are also available.

In addition to the 130th-anniversary celebrations, the itineraries will also present the opportunity for guests to experience cruising aboard one of Hurtigruten’s hybrid-powered ships. MS Richard With is currently in drydock for the technical makeover and will emerge with a brand-new engine and battery packs, thus cutting CO2 emissions by 25% and allowing for ship-to-shore power connectivity. Hurtigruten plans to equip all seven of its coastal fleet with the new technology, with MS Kong Harald and MS Nordlys set to follow in 2023.

Commenting on forthcoming celebrations, Hurtigruten’s CEO Hedda Felin said:

“We will celebrate the iconic Coastal Express’ first 130 years by honouring those that have sailed before us and the communities we served – and still serve today. We will bring together the modern and the traditional in this year-long celebration, with newly upgraded ships, anniversary menus and historical lectures and excursions.”

Reservations are now open for Hurtigruten cruises in 2023. For more information, or to make a booking, please call our Voyage Consultants on 0800 008 6677.
