This Quick Getaway is timed around one of the great events in European maritime culture. Sailing the Thames under the Tower Bridge and east into the North Sea, the ship cruises the Elbe inland to Hamburg, arriving in time for the Hafengeburtstag, the world’s largest port festival, held each May along the city’s 3.5-mile Harbour Mile. More than one million visitors watch over 300 tall ships and historic vessels parade past the Elbphilharmonie and the Landungsbrücken piers, with the Tugboat Ballet and a fireworks display over the Elbe among the highlights. Helgoland follows, Germany’s only high-sea island, located far out in the North Sea, car-free and duty-free, with red sandstone cliffs and harbor seals on the beaches. Amsterdam closes out the voyage: canals, the Rijksmuseum, and the merchant houses of the Golden Age.
