Quick Getaway: Germany via the Kiel Canal

Cruise overview
This Quick Getaway is built around one of the great small-ship experiences in northern Europe: a full daylight transit of the Kiel Canal. The 60-mile waterway connecting the North Sea to the Baltic handles more vessel transits than the Panama and Suez Canals combined, and Baltic travelers seek it out specifically on small ships, the only vessels with full deck access for the entire passage[BB1] . An overnight in Hamburg gives a full evening in the Speicherstadt (warehouse district) before the Elbe carries the ship to the canal entrance at Brunsbüttel. Warnemunde follows, with Berlin reachable by train in 2.5 hours, then Binz on Rügen, where the UNESCO-listed Jasmund National Park and the Königsstuhl chalk cliffs are within easy reach.
Itinerary
Hamburg
Hamburg is Germany’s second-largest city with a history dating back to Charlemagne. A major port, this vibrant city is home to art and culture, extensive shopping facilities, Baroque buildings and waterfront vistas. With its well-known fish market, art galleries and Museums together with several beautiful parks including a botanical garden, this is a city with something for everyone. British visitors who remember the Swinging Sixties may like to visit the streets around Grosse Freiheit, where an unknown pop group called The Beatles gave their first public performances in various local clubs before achieving worldwide fame.
