Cruise overview
Depart Benoa for Probolinggo, crossing the whispering Sea of Sand by jeep to watch Mount Bromo exhale smoke over the Tengger caldera’s sea of mist, then climbing the crater stairs to peer into its heart. Continue to Semarang, gateway to Borobudur, the world’s largest Buddhist monument, its bell-shaped stupas emerging from soft haze on the Kedu plain beneath a horizon of smoking volcanic cones. At Karimunjawa, a 27-island marine park in the Java Sea, wade a floating shark nursery and kayak mangrove boardwalks, before Belitung’s UNESCO-listed granite islets rise from impossibly clear seas around the old Dutch lighthouse at Lengkuas. Bangka’s Parai Tenggiri offers a sculpture garden of car-sized boulders glowing rose-gold above clear shallows. In Singapore, wander the Supertrees of Gardens by the Bay and sip a Sling at Raffles before island-hopping through the Gulf of Thailand: Ko Samui’s Big Buddha, the sheer emerald islands of Ang Thong that inspired The Beach, and Ko Tao’s coral gardens. Your voyage concludes in Bangkok, where the gilded spires of the Grand Palace and the reclining Buddha of Wat Pho crown the City of Angels.
Itinerary
Benoa, Bali
Bali really is as alluring as everyone says. This island, slightly bigger than Delaware, has it all: beaches, volcanoes, terraced rice fields, forests, renowned resorts, surfing, golf, and world-class dive sites. But what sets Bali apart from other nearby tropical destinations is Balinese tradition, and villagers dedicated to celebrating it. The hundreds of temples, dances, rituals, and crafts linked to their ancient Hindu faith aren’t a show for tourists, but a living, breathing culture in which visitors are warmly received by the Balinese, who cherish their own identities.
