Day 1

Piraeus

Known as the birthplace of Western civilisation, Athens is a vibrant tapestry of history and modernity. Standing sentinel above the city is the famous Acropolis, a fortified hill dominated by the Parthenon, atmospheric ruins of a white marble temple built during the height of the ancient Greek Empire.

This afternoon, step on board your next-generation Discovery Yacht, Scenic Ikon. Your journey into wonder begins with a warm greeting from the Captain and crew. Meet your butler and settle into your spacious suite with a glass of champagne. Then join your fellow guests on deck to toast the start of an unforgettable voyage.

Please book your flight to arrive into Athens prior to 02:00 PM.

It’s no wonder that all roads lead to the fascinating and maddening metropolis of Athens. Lift your eyes 200 feet above the city to the Parthenon, its honey-color marble columns rising from a massive limestone base, and you behold architectural perfection that has not been surpassed in 2,500 years. But, today, this shrine of classical form dominates a 21st-century boomtown. To experience Athens—Athína in Greek—fully is to understand the essence of Greece: ancient monuments surviving in a sea of cement, startling beauty amid the squalor, tradition juxtaposed with modernity. Locals depend on humor and flexibility to deal with the chaos; you should do the same. The rewards are immense. Although Athens covers a huge area, the major landmarks of the ancient Greek, Roman, and Byzantine periods are close to the modern city center. You can easily walk from the Acropolis to many other key sites, taking time to browse in shops and relax in cafés and tavernas along the way. From many quarters of the city you can glimpse “the glory that was Greece” in the form of the Acropolis looming above the horizon, but only by actually climbing that rocky precipice can you feel the impact of the ancient settlement. The Acropolis and Filopappou, two craggy hills sitting side by side; the ancient Agora (marketplace); and Kerameikos, the first cemetery, form the core of ancient and Roman Athens. Along the Unification of Archaeological Sites promenade, you can follow stone-paved, tree-lined walkways from site to site, undisturbed by traffic. Cars have also been banned or reduced in other streets in the historical center. In the National Archaeological Museum, vast numbers of artifacts illustrate the many millennia of Greek civilization; smaller museums such as the Goulandris Museum of Cycladic Art Museum and the Byzantine and Christian Museum illuminate the history of particular regions or periods. Athens may seem like one huge city, but it is really a conglomeration of neighborhoods with distinctive characters. The Eastern influences that prevailed during the 400-year rule of the Ottoman Empire are still evident in Monastiraki, the bazaar area near the foot of the Acropolis. On the northern slope of the Acropolis, stroll through Plaka (if possible by moonlight), an area of tranquil streets lined with renovated mansions, to get the flavor of the 19th-century’s gracious lifestyle. The narrow lanes of Anafiotika, a section of Plaka, thread past tiny churches and small, color-washed houses with wooden upper stories, recalling a Cycladic island village. In this maze of winding streets, vestiges of the older city are everywhere: crumbling stairways lined with festive tavernas; dank cellars filled with wine vats; occasionally a court or diminutive garden, enclosed within high walls and filled with magnolia trees and the flaming trumpet-shaped flowers of hibiscus bushes. Formerly run-down old quarters, such as Thission, Gazi and Psirri, popular nightlife areas filled with bars and mezedopoleia (similar to tapas bars), are now in the process of gentrification, although they still retain much of their original charm, as does the colorful produce and meat market on Athinas. The area around Syntagma Square, the tourist hub, and Omonia Square, the commercial heart of the city about 1 km (½ mi) northwest, is distinctly European, having been designed by the court architects of King Otho, a Bavarian, in the 19th century. The chic shops and bistros of ritzy Kolonaki nestle at the foot of Mt. Lycabettus, Athens’s highest hill (909 feet). Each of Athens’s outlying suburbs has a distinctive character: in the north is wealthy, tree-lined Kifissia, once a summer resort for aristocratic Athenians, and in the south and southeast lie Glyfada, Voula, and Vouliagmeni, with their sandy beaches, seaside bars, and lively summer nightlife. Just beyond the city’s southern fringes is Piraeus, a bustling port city of waterside fish tavernas and Saronic Gulf views.

Scenic Ikon Amenities

Overview

Scenic Ikon is built around experiences you won’t find on larger ships. Two onboard helicopters open up flightseeing excursions and remote landings, while a custom-built submersible takes guests beneath the surface in Antarctica and beyond. The 18,000 sq ft Senses Spa spans two decks, and a stern marina provides direct access to the water for kayaking, paddleboarding, and Seabob diving. With a Polar Class 6 rating and Ice Class 1A Super hull, Scenic Ikon is equally at home in the Mediterranean as in polar waters.

Scenic Ikon Helicopter

Helicopters

Scenic Ikon carries two Airbus H130-T2 helicopters, housed in dedicated below-deck hangars. Guests booking early or in top-tier suites receive complimentary flightseeing excursions: 20 minutes in the Mediterranean, 30 minutes in Antarctica. Beyond scenic flights, the helicopter programme includes exclusive landings at remote golf courses, coastal vineyards, historic landmarks, and wilderness locations inaccessible by any other means. It’s a perspective few expedition ships can offer.

Scenic Ikon Amenities Submersible

Submersible

Scenic Neptune III is a custom-designed Triton AVA-9 submersible carrying up to nine guests. Descending to depths of around 100 metres, it offers a panoramic acrylic sphere for uninterrupted views of coral reefs, marine life, and polar seabeds. Submersible dives operate in select destinations including Antarctica, though not in the Mediterranean or European waters. For guests seeking a genuine frontier experience, it’s one of Scenic Ikon’s most distinctive features.

Scenic Ikon Amenities Discovery Equipment

Discovery Equipment

Scenic Ikon’s stern marina opens directly onto the water, giving guests easy access to kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, Seabobs, and snorkelling gear. A fleet of Zodiacs handles shore landings in remote destinations, while Fassmer superyacht tenders provide a more sheltered transfer when conditions require. Whether you’re exploring a secluded cove in the Aegean or landing on an Antarctic beach, the equipment is included in your fare.

Scenic Ikon Amenities Polar Capabilities

Polar Capability

Scenic Ikon is built to Polar Code 6 standards with an Ice Class 1A Super strengthened hull, making her one of the most capable expedition yachts launching in 2028. This engineering allows the ship to navigate Antarctic waters safely during the austral summer before repositioning to the Mediterranean for the warmer months. Dynamic positioning systems hold the ship steady without anchoring, protecting sensitive seabeds. It’s the technical backbone that makes Scenic Ikon’s dual-season itineraries possible.

Scenic Ikon Other Amenities

Other Amenities

Public spaces include a forward-facing Observation Lounge with floor-to-ceiling windows, ideal for wildlife spotting or watching the ship navigate icy channels. The Scenic Lounge Bar houses a collection of over 130 whiskeys, all included in your fare. A pool deck with heated plunge pool and cabana-style sun loungers offers a warm-weather contrast to polar excursions, while the onboard theatre hosts expedition briefings, guest lectures, and evening entertainment throughout each voyage.

Scenic Ikon Wellness Spa

Spa & Thermal

The Senses Rejuvenation Spa spans two decks and 18,000 sq ft, making it the largest wellness facility on any Scenic Discovery Yacht. Hydrotherapy pools, a salt therapy room, thermal suites, and an ice fountain form the core of the thermal experience, with heated loungers throughout. ESPA treatments range from targeted massages to full-body rituals, bookable throughout the voyage. Guests in the Ikon Penthouse receive private in-suite spa services, bringing the same ESPA menu to their own wellness studio.

Scenic Ikon Wellness Fitness

Fitness

Beyond the spa, Scenic Ikon offers a fully equipped fitness centre with ocean views, open around the clock. The Discovery Team runs guided activities including morning yoga sessions, stretch classes, and post-excursion cooldowns. On expedition days, the physical side comes naturally: Zodiac landings, kayaking, paddleboarding, and hikes led by onboard naturalists. Whether you prefer structured workouts or an active itinerary, the 2028 season is designed to balance relaxation with movement.

Scenic Ikon Entertainment Pool

By day

Life on board between excursions is unhurried but never dull. The Discovery Team, including marine biologists, naturalists, and historians, host lectures and briefings in the onboard theatre, preparing guests for upcoming landings or unpacking what they’ve just seen. Culinary masterclasses run throughout the voyage, while quieter moments might mean a coffee at the Azure Café, a lap in the pool, or a seat in the Observation Lounge watching for wildlife. It’s structured enough to enrich, relaxed enough to feel like a holiday.

Scenic Ikon Entertainment Night

When night falls

Evenings shift between laid-back and refined. Pre-dinner drinks at the Scenic Lounge might involve working through the 130-whiskey collection, while the 15 dining venues offer everything from French dégustation at Lumière to Asian fusion at Koko’s. After dinner, the theatre hosts guest speakers, local performers, and cultural showcases tailored to each destination. On polar voyages, late-night deck time offers a chance to watch for the Southern Lights. No formal nights, no forced fun, just a grown-up atmosphere that matches the ship.
