Cruise overview

At the gateway to the polar region, the Svalbard archipelago reveals deep fjords, enchanting glaciers and vast stretches of wild tundra. In Longyearbyen, embark on a comprehensive voyage to discover this unspoilt land nestled in the far reaches of the High Arctic, between 76° and 80° North latitude.  As the journey unfolds, jagged peaks emerge and the first ice appears, with seabirds gliding overhead: northern fulmars, Arctic terns, black-legged kittiwakes… Exploring the North-East and South-East Svalbard nature reserves reveals grand landscapes, hidden fjords and wild shores where walruses find refuge.  Svalbard reindeer and Arctic foxes roam freely across the tundra, while the blow of a whale may at times break the dark surface of the water. At the edge of the pack ice, a polar bear may appear, a rare sight in this world shaped by ice and silence.

Itinerary

Day 1

Longyearbyen

Longyearbyen is the biggest settlement in Svalbard. Seat of the Norwegian administration, it also has the best services and infrastructure in the archipelago. Located deep in the Adventfjord, a sidearm of the Isfjorden (Icefjord), Longyearbyen’s airport can be used all-year round, but its harbor is blocked by ice in winter. Most shops, hotels, restaurants and a hospital are within easy walking distance of the port. One of the most prominent buildings in town is the UNIS center, where several Norwegian universities have joined forces to operate and offer the northernmost higher education to both Norwegian and international students. Adjacent to UNIS, and well worth a visit, is the Svalbard Museum, covering the natural history and exploitation of Svalbard. Remnants of the former mining activity can be seen all around Longyearbyen and even in town.
