Stay in Tokyo for three nights before a ship has even crossed the horizon, set the tone for a journey that keeps revealing unexpected sides of Japan. From the immense, quietly humming capital, Oceania Riviera carries you north to Hakodate, where wooden merchant houses and a star-shaped fortress tell the story of Japan’s cautious, complicated opening to the outside world.
From there, the journey heads west along a coastline few travellers ever reach. In Niigata, sake is woven into the landscape and culture, with centuries-old brewing traditions offering a taste of Japan at its most distinctive. Sakaiminato brings a playful twist with its streets lined with characters from manga artist Shigeru Mizuki’s wonderfully spooky world. Kanazawa, spared the bombs that reshaped so much of Japan, offers streets that still look much as they did centuries ago, and Hiroshima asks you to sit with something heavier and more meaningful than any postcard view. The journey ends at Shimizu, with Mount Fuji rising above the bay like a rumour made solid, before the ship returns to Tokyo and the long flight home.
