Itinerary

Day 1

Trondheim

One of Scandinavia’s oldest cities, Trondheim was the first capital of Norway, from AD 997 to 1380. Founded in 997 by Viking king Olav Tryggvason, it was first named Nidaros (still the name of the cathedral), a composite word referring to the city’s location at the mouth of the Nidelva River. Today, it’s Central Norway’s largest (and Norway’s third largest) city, with a population of 150,000. The wide streets of the historic city center remain lined with brightly painted wood houses and striking warehouses. But it’s no historic relic: it’s also the home to NTNU (Norwegian University of Science and Technology) and is Norway’s technological capital.

Accomodation

On board our new coastal cruise ships, the emphasis is on providing passengers with spacious cabins. Our cabins are intended to be pleasant places to relax during the day and sleep well at night. The typical Nordic décor reflects the landscape through which you will be sailing.

Most of the cabins have sea views, while others are located inside the ship. Some of these are small, with just two beds and make an inexpensive alternative if you are not travelling far. Our cabins and suites range from 16m² to 45m², and can accommodate up to four people. All cabins have wifi and USB ports.

Dining

Eating is about more than sustenance. A trip with Havila Voyages gives you the taste of Norway reflecting the bold, cold and clean natural environment. This creates memories that you can savour long after you have returned home.

Enrichment

Away from the comfort of the ship, you’re free to craft and enjoy an experience that is as individual as you are. You are invited to join us on trips every day. We offer around 70 excursions, so you can customise your trip depending on the season.

See Norwegian islands, fjords and Arctic nature at close quarters; try traditional Norwegian food and experience the country’s culture and history. Experience the highlights of the Norwegian coast with the Havila Voyages’ excursion programme. Speed across the plains on dog or reindeer sledges. Take a trip in a rib to watch sea eagles or feel the power of Saltstraumen, the strongest tidal current in the world. Gaze in wonder at the medieval architecture of Nidaros Cathedral, one of northern Europe’s largest cathedrals, or enjoy a traditional banquet in the Viking chieftain’s longhouse. You can taste local specialities and king crab that you have caught yourself and you can visit the Russian border, the World Heritage Islands of Vega and, of course, the North Cape.

Feeling adventurous? You can visit the Russian border, the World Heritage Islands of Vega and, of course, the North Cape.

Entertainment

With on-board facilities and entertainment, there is always an activity available, even when you prefer a break from admiring the passing scenery.

On board you can learn about Norwegian history, culture and cuisine. There’s also some Nordic fun when we cross into the Arctic Circle.

The Norwegian coast, with its ever-changing views confers an air of tranquillity as it glides slowly by. Sometimes we pass particularly spectacular locations along the coast. We will give you a little advance notice and information about such places.

You can enjoy the views through the large windows or you may prefer to go up on deck for a closer view.

As we pass the Arctic Circle, we invite you out on deck to a playful baptism ceremony by Njord, the Norse god of the sea.

During your voyage, you will also be invited to sample traditional Norwegian food.

In summer, it stays bright throughout the night during the summer. In the very far north of the Arctic Circle you can see all of the sun over the horizon, and experience the most nights of midnight sun.
