Departing Tokyo, our first port of call is Shimizu, famous for its fresh tuna and fabulous views of the snow-capped Mount Fuji. Then we reach bustling Nagoya, the birthplace of Toyota, and Wakayama, where you can visit a restored 16th-century castle and stroll its gardens – rich with fall foliage at this time of year. An overnight in Osaka brings plenty of time to enjoy this neon-lit city’s world-famous nightlife and street food: sample staples like okonomiyaki (savoury cabbage-based pancakes) and ikayaki (grilled squid skewers). In Kochi, explore ancient temples and hike to the impossibly blue Nikobuchi Waterfall, before a day at sea brings us to Kagoshima to visit Sengan-en, sprawling gardens that overlook Kinko Bay towards the active volcano Sakurajima. Next is Nagasaki, a vibrant city with a turbulent history: visit the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum for a somber account of the 1945 bombing and its aftermath. Relax with another day at sea before we reach our final destination, the South Korean city of Incheon, near Seoul.
