After discovering the maritime heritage of the UK, we leave Southampton for the Belgian seaside town of Zeebrugge; vibrant Rotterdam, the Netherlands’ second-largest city with a tasty food scene; and Hamburg, where you can enjoy two days exploring its museums, architecture and cool cafés. A day at sea brings a chance to enjoy the onboard spa and restaurants before we arrive in Oslo, the Norwegian capital. Then we come to Denmark, for two days in the fairytale city of Copenhagen, viewing its historic palaces, castles, and churches. We head now to Sweden’s west-coast town of Lysekil, framed by red-hued cliffs, before crossing to Kristiansand in Norway, with its wooden houses and white-sand beaches. Two more Norwegian ports follow: Haugesund, with its Viking history and coastal walks, and Bergen, gateway to magnificent fjords and mountains. A day at sea brings us to a trio of Scottish islands – the Shetlands, Orkneys and Isle of Lewis – for dramatic landscapes, and, of course, a dram or two. We call at Greencastle, on the Irish coast, before arriving in Liverpool to enjoy all that this former European Capital of Culture has to offer.

Southampton
Lying near the head of Southampton Water, a peninsula between the estuaries of the Rivers Test and Itchen, Southampton is Britain’s largest cruise port. It has been one of England’s major ports since the Middle Ages, when it exported wool and hides from the hinterland and imported wine from Bordeaux. The city suffered heavy damage during World War Two and as a result the centre has been extensively rebuilt, but there are still some interesting medieval buildings including the Bargate, one of the finest city gatehouses in England.
