Cruise overview

New Zealand is our goal and there are plenty of islands to hop between along the way. Leaving Lautoka and its bustling markets in our wake, we wave goodbye to Fiji and indulge in a lazy day at sea before arriving in Port Vila, capital of Vanuatu. From a walk in the rainforest to buying handicrafts at the local market, you’ll find plenty of ways to make memories here. Yet, all too soon, we’ll be off again to Lifou, the largest of the Loyalty Islands in the nation of New Caledonia. Could there be a better example of the castaway island than this remote palm-topped hump of coral, kissed by clear seas? It’s the very picture of a tropical paradise. Noumea, capital of this island chain, comes next, adding French bistros and chic shopping in the mix with yet more gorgeous powder sands. Then we arrive in L’Iles des Pins to take a refreshing dip in the sea pool and explore a grotto created for a local queen. Now we have some serious sailing to do, but you can just watch the world go by as we spend two days at sea bound for the Bay of Islands, rich in nature, before arriving in cosmopolitan Auckland on New Zealand’s North Island, where there are natural and cultural treasures to discover.

Itinerary

Day 1

Lautoka

North of Nadi through sugarcane plantations and past the Sabeto Mountains is Lautoka, nicknamed the Sugar City for the local agriculture and its big processing mill. With a population of around 50,000, it’s the only city besides Suva and, like the capital, has a pleasant waterfront. It’s the sailing point for Blue Lagoon and Beachcomber Cruises but is otherwise unremarkable for tourists, itself having few hotels and fewer good restaurants. Locals recommend the city as a less-expensive place to shop for clothing, but note that it can take as long as 45 minutes to drive here. Legend has it that Lautoka acquired its name when two chiefs engaged in combat and one hit the other with a spear. He proclaimed “lau toka” (spear hit) and thus the future town was named.
