Our journey begins with an overnight stay in Fuerte Amador, offering plenty of time to explore nearby Panama City and, of course, buy a Panama hat. Then we’ll slip along the Panama Canal, a narrow channel built more than a century ago that pushes back nature for 52 miles to connect the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. Emerging in the Caribbean Sea, we make for Cartegena, on the coast of Colombia, with a beauty of an old city that is listed by UNESCO. Make the most of a day at sea as we sail to Port Antonio in Jamaica, once the hangout of stars from the golden age of Hollywood, such as Errol Flynn. Now the Dominican Republic beckons, where we will explore the other-worldly salt flats at Cabo Rojo, and see local artists at work in La Romana. Lively San Juan, its cobbled streets lined with pastel-colored houses, comes next before we head for an overnight in Charleston, South Carolina, a city famed for its antebellum architecture. A final sea day offers time to relax before the adrenaline hits in New York City.
