We’ll glide across the sparkling blue waters of the Mediterranean on this cruise, picking out some of the region’s jewels as we go. Our quest starts in the lively city of Barcelona, from where we cross the French border to call at Toulon for fine sands and fine art. Glamorous Monte Carlo follows – can you resist a throw of the dice in the famous casino? Then, it’s onwards to Italy and Livorno in Tuscany, gateway to Florence’s cultural riches and the vineyards of Chianti. Porto Santo Stefano offers a wilder view of Tuscany, then we cross to the palm-fringed waterfront of Olbia on the enigmatic island of Sardinia. To Sicily now and Trapani, a city so close to Africa, that continent’s influence is reflected in the tempting dishes served in its restaurants. Then it’s back to the Italian mainland and Salerno for the Amalfi coast, with its heart-melting landscape of colorful villages clinging to the cliffs, before we arrive at Civitavecchia, within touching distance of Rome.

The capital of Catalonia is a banquet for the senses, with its beguiling mix of ancient and modern architecture, tempting cafés and markets, and sun-drenched Mediterranean beaches. A stroll along La Rambla and through waterfront Barceloneta, as well as a tour of Gaudí’s majestic Sagrada Famíliaand his other unique creations, are part of a visit to Spain’s second-largest city. Modern art museums and chic shops call for attention, too. Barcelona’s vibe stays lively well into the night, when you can linger over regional wine and cuisine at buzzing tapas bars.
