Cruise overview

Our first port of call on this ocean-crossing odyssey is the historic Royal Naval Dockyard in Bermuda, where we have two days to enjoy its exciting entertainment venues and great restaurants before crossing the Atlantic to Europe. As Portugal comes into view, we’ll make three stops at the Azores archipelago – Horta, Praia da Vitoria, and Ponta Delgada – to watch for whales, sample delicious wines, and hike to volcanic crater lakes. Then it’s over to Spain’s Canary Islands, first to the cobbled streets of Santa Cruz de la Palma on the island of La Palma and then sun-drenched Las Palmas on Gran Canaria. Two days in Funchal, Madeira offer ample time to enjoy its lush, mountainous landscapes before we circle back to the Canary Islands, calling at Santa Cruz de Tenerife for beaches and baroque architecture and Arrecife on Lanzarote to sample volcanic wines. On the African coast, we come to Morocco to visit Agadir, with its crescent beach and café-lined promenade, and Casablanca – browse the bustling souks for souvenirs. Our journey ends in Portugal’s colorful capital Lisbon.

Itinerary

Day 1

Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Like many southeast Florida neighbors, Fort Lauderdale has long been revitalizing. In a state where gaudy tourist zones often stand aloof from workaday downtowns, Fort Lauderdale exhibits consistency at both ends of the 2-mile Las Olas corridor. The sparkling look results from upgrades both downtown and on the beachfront. Matching the downtown’s innovative arts district, cafés, and boutiques is an equally inventive beach area, with hotels, cafés, and shops facing an undeveloped shoreline, and new resort-style hotels replacing faded icons of yesteryear. Despite wariness of pretentious overdevelopment, city leaders have allowed a striking number of glittering high-rises. Nostalgic locals and frequent visitors fret over the diminishing vision of sailboats bobbing in waters near downtown; however, Fort Lauderdale remains the yachting capital of the world, and the water toys don’t seem to be going anywhere.
