Miami cruises

Gateway to the Caribbean and beyond

Miami is one of the most popular embarkation points in the world, with PortMiami welcoming over eight million cruise passengers each year. It’s also home to the headquarters of several of the industry’s leading cruise lines, which speaks volumes about its importance as a global cruising hub.

What makes Miami particularly appealing is the array of available cruise itineraries. The Caribbean is the standout, with operators such as Oceania Cruises, Regent Seven Seas and Azamara Cruises basing ships here throughout the peak season, but you’ll also find sailings through the Panama Canal and into Central America. It’s also a starting point for selected world cruises, making it one of the most versatile departure points anywhere in the world.

For many of our clients, Miami isn’t just a place to begin a cruise, but somewhere worth arriving a few days early. The city offers a seamless start to a cruise and stay holiday, with short transfer times from the airport to the hotel and the port, alongside a vibrant mix of neighbourhoods, iconic Art Deco architecture and some of Florida’s best beaches. It’s an easy, well-connected gateway to warm-weather cruising, and one that consistently delivers both convenience and atmosphere in equal measure.

When to cruise from Miami

Miami operates as a year-round cruise hub, though the winter months between October and April tend to be the most popular. This is when conditions are at their most comfortable, both in the city and across the Caribbean. Hurricane season runs from June to November, with September and October carrying the highest risk, though modern routing technology means significant disruptions are rare. Shoulder-season sailings can offer excellent value for those with flexibility, while some major cruise lines, such as MSC Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Line, actually sail from the port year-round.

  • Peak season (December to April): Dry weather, comfortable temperatures, highest demand for Caribbean itineraries.
  • Shoulder months (October to November, May): Pleasant conditions, competitive fares, fewer crowds at terminals.
  • Summer (June to September): Hot and humid with afternoon storms, popular with families during school holidays.
  • Hurricane season (June to November): September and October carry the highest risk, with itineraries occasionally adjusted.

ocean drive miami cruises

South Beach and the Art Deco District

Pastel facades and ocean views

Ocean Drive is the postcard image of Miami. Pastel-coloured buildings from the 1930s line the beachfront, housing boutique hotels, pavement cafés and some of the city’s liveliest restaurants. The Art Deco Historic District contains the world’s largest concentration of this architectural style, and a morning stroll here before embarkation captures something of the city’s enduring glamour. Most South Beach hotels are around 20 minutes from the cruise terminals.

everglades national park miami cruises

Everglades National Park

Airboats and alligators

Less than an hour from downtown, the Everglades offer a completely different perspective on Florida. Airboat tours glide across the sawgrass in search of alligators and birdlife, while walking trails pass through quieter, shaded areas of the park. In our experience, this is best planned as a full-day excursion, so it suits those arriving in Miami at least a day or two before embarkation rather than those on tighter schedules.

little havana miami cruises

Little Havana

Cuban flavour on Calle Ocho

Miami’s Cuban heritage is most visible along Calle Ocho, where domino players gather in Máximo Gómez Park, and the scent of Cuban coffee drifts from small street-side cafés. Cigar rollers can often be seen at work in shopfronts, adding to the neighbourhood’s character. Many of our clients choose to spend a relaxed afternoon here before their cruise, as it offers a more authentic, cultural contrast to the beachfront areas.

brickell skyscrapers miami cruises

Downtown Miami and Brickell

Skyline views and waterfront dining

Directly across the water from the cruise terminals, Brickell’s skyline forms a striking backdrop to the port. Bayside Marketplace is a convenient spot for waterfront dining with views of ships arriving and departing, while the Pérez Art Museum Miami offers a quieter cultural option nearby. For those looking to stay close to the port without sacrificing atmosphere, this is often one of the most practical and well-connected areas to base yourself.

key biscayne lighthouse miami cruises

Key Biscayne

A quieter slice of coastline

Just south of downtown, Key Biscayne offers a more relaxed alternative to South Beach. Crandon Park Beach is frequently ranked among Florida’s best, while Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park combines cycling trails with a historic lighthouse. It’s an easy half-day option and, in our experience, works particularly well for clients who want some downtime before boarding without venturing too far from the city.
