Far East Adventure Cruises

Few places mix the exotic and mysterious as well as the area we know as the Far East, a truly diverse and culture-rich series of destinations which boast ages-old history, amazing architecture, astounding wildlife and beguiling people.

The Mekong River features both historic Vietnam and exciting Cambodia, countries which have been something of an enigma to the Western world in the past but which are now vibrantly open and enticing. They include the fascination of Ho Chi Minh City and vibrant Phnom Penh, along with the unmissable World Heritage site of Angkor Wat, the stupendous 12th century Hindu temple complex.

Then there is Thailand, another journey of contrasts and cultures, with its principal city of Bangkok and one of the most cosmopolitan faces anywhere in the world. Few places mix the old and the new quite so well, with its range of historic monuments (like the 18th century Grand Palace and temple of Wat Arun) and cutting-edge sophistication, notably with its superb shopping.

Borneo, and the mighty Rajang River, is a genuine jungle experience par excellence, taking in a broad slice of Malaysia with the architectural vestiges of the Brooke Raj, the prosperous old Chinese city of Sibu and the unique longhouse culture of the Iban people. Pepper farms, fruit plantations and rainforest treks are all part of the experience here.

Cruising around the island of Sumatra from Singapore introduces the westernmost stretch of the cultural pot-pourri that is Indonesia and another journey into lush rainforests, palm-lined beaches, traditional villages, floating markets and captivating wildlife – including the thriving orangutan population of Gunung Leuser National Park.

Travelling further afield brings you to Japan, and yet another adventure into a different culture and way of life that is both fascinating and absorbing. The tragic cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki can both be found on the classic Inland Sea itinerary, along with more lyrical ports of call such as 17th century Kanazawa, the world cultural centre of Miyajima, and Busan in South Korea, where tradition and history come to vivid life.
