From the moment that I stepped onboard Crystal Cruises‘ Crystal Serenity, I knew I was in for something truly special. My journey began in Barcelona with a warm, welcoming reception and dinner at Waterside, setting the tone for the days to come. Over the following three nights, we called at Marseilles and Sète, enjoying insightful presentations, elegant dining experiences, and relaxed networking events in some of the ship’s most iconic spaces. The voyage concluded back in Barcelona, but what unfolded in between was a perfect snapshot of Crystal’s reimagined luxury. Effortless, elegant and entirel captivating.
Modern Crystal Luxury Reimagined
Crystal Serenity has always had a refined air, but now it feels more modern and graceful than ever. The design is elegant without being ostentatious, and there is a boutique hotel feel throughout. Clean lines, soft tones, and a real sense of space made the ship feel both open and intimate.

Suite Life in the Sapphire Veranda
I stayed in Crystal’s Sapphire Veranda Suite, and it is easily one of the most spacious and well-designed staterooms I have experienced at sea. Essentially two cabins merged into one, the space includes a long lounge with a sofa, dining table, and TV, separated from the bedroom by a curtain. The bed was supremely comfortable, complete with rounded corners and a pillow menu. Storage is thoughtfully placed, including a walk-in wardrobe, although drawer space in the bedroom itself was limited.
The suite opens onto a generous balcony, accessible from both the lounge and bedroom. While it did not come with a lounger as standard, one was available on request. Thoughtful touches included Ortigia Sicilia toiletries, a fridge drawer, and a coffee machine. An iPad allowed us to contact our butler, make reservations, and more, anywhere onboard. Champagne welcomed us on arrival, and guests can even pre-order a full-sized spirit bottle for their suite.
The bathroom deserves special mention, too. It is massive. A rainfall shower, side jets, and a handheld showerhead can all be used at once, and the space felt more like a spa bathroom than one on a ship. Well-lit, well-stocked, and well-thought-out.
Spaces That Inspire
Around Crystal Serenity, there were several standout areas. I loved the egg chairs at the Trident Grill. They were fun, comfortable, and just quirky enough to be memorable. The lounges and restaurants all felt light, fresh, and immaculately clean. Even when the pool deck became busy, a serene, forward-facing area with sun loungers was available, offering a peaceful retreat.
Dining on Crystal That Delivers
Dining on Crystal Serenity was a true highlight. Waterside, the main restaurant, has kept its much-loved cream of mushroom soup, now served in an oregano bread bowl. Osteria D’Ovidio takes Italian cuisine to a whole new level. This was a dinner to remember. At Beefbar, I tried a Filet Mignon that quite literally melted in my mouth. It was hands down one of the best I have had anywhere.
The Bistro was perfect for a casual bite, with deli-style snacks and speciality hot drinks. Market Place offered buffet dining with plenty of private, two-person tables by the windows. Trident Grill served freshly made burgers and wraps, presented with finesse.
Although I did not dine at Umi Uma, a handy tip for future guests is that you can sit at the sushi bar without a reservation or cover charge.
Service was consistent throughout. It was attentive without being overbearing, always friendly, and wonderfully personalised.
Activities, Entertainment & Wellness
Crystal has adopted a broader approach to wellness. The gym is spacious and offers a range of fitness and wellness classes, not just the standard workouts. For those who like their sport a little more relaxed, there are golf nets and even a golf pro onboard, plus tennis and paddle or pickleball courts.
Evenings came alive with live music. The singers in Palm Court took requests, and the presence of male dance hosts added a charming touch. Avenue Saloon also featured live performances in a relaxed setting.
The spa, however, felt like the one area that could benefit from more. While the sauna and steam room were complimentary, there were no hot beds, whirlpools, or relaxation areas. This is something to be aware of if spa time is important to you.
Crystal Service with a Signature Touch
Service is where Crystal shines brightest. Our butler and housekeeper programmed their numbers into the in-room phone and iPad, making it effortless to reach them. Each day brought freshly prepared canapés. Instead of nightly chocolates, we were welcomed with a box of nine truffles. A guest that has previously cruised with Crystal was recognised by several crew members, some of whom had been with Crystal before its relaunch. That level of personal recognition speaks volumes.
The Vibe Onboard
The atmosphere onboard was laid-back and casual. It was sophisticated yet far from pretentious. Friendships blossomed naturally, and the overall environment felt friendly and inviting. Although it’s certainly affluent, Crystal Serenity remains understated about it. The ship seamlessly accommodates couples, solo adventurers, and even families. There is a designated kids’ zone with adaptable supervision based on the number of guests.
Final Moments and Final Thoughts
Disembarkation was seamless. I kept my case with me, but there was no issue leaving it in the suite while enjoying breakfast. Everything felt organised, calm, and guest-focused.
Would I sail again? Without hesitation. The fresh colour palette, exceptional suites, and friendly, understated elegance make Crystal Serenity a true standout. Next time, I will definitely book a table at Umi Uma.
