Helen Mirren Christens Scenic Eclipse

10th September 2019 marked another historic moment in the world of cruising as Dame Helen Mirren christened Scenic Eclipse.

Claimed to be ‘The World’s First Discovery Yacht’, Scenic Eclipse was christened in Manhattan harbour on the morning of her inaugural US voyage. Representatives from Scenic attended the ceremony, along with members of the press and a hand-picked selection of figureheads from the cruise industry.

Dame Helen Mirren, who is also Godmother to P&O Cruises’ Ventura, said:

“I was thrilled to be invited to take on the role of Scenic Eclipse godmother, even more so now that I have stepped aboard and seen the level of design detail and technology that have gone into her creation. She is an exceptional cruising experience, and I’m honoured to have christened her. I wish her crew and guests many years of sailing adventures and discovery.”

Following tradition, Dame Helen then wished Scenic Eclipse and it’s crew good luck, before christening the ship with the words “I name this ship Scenic Eclipse. May God bless all her who sail on her”.

Dame Helen Mirren, who looked resplendent in her role as Godmother, is, of course, best known for winning an Academy Award for Best Actress in 2007 for riveting performance in The Queen. Mirren’s other Academy Award nominations include The Madness of King George (1994), Gosford Park (2001), and The Last Station (2009).

Some of her other notable film roles include The Long Good Friday, The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover (1989), Teaching Mrs. Tingle (1999), Calendar Girls (2003), Hitchcock (2012), Woman in Gold (2015) and in television as Jane Tennison in Prime Suspect and Elizabeth I. She will next be seen in the highly anticipated HBO/SKY limited series in the title role of “Catherine The Great” and the equally anticipated Warner Bros.’ film “The Good Liar.”

Following an early evening departure from New York, Scenic Eclipse will sail north along the coastline of the US, visiting Martha’s Vineyard and Boston, before arriving in Halifax, Nova Scotia. In October, she will head to the Chilean Fjords and Antarctica (via the Caribbean), where she will be based until April 2020.

Built by the Uljanik Group in Croatia, Scenic Eclipse promises guests the opportunity to explore further than ever before, courtesy of exceptional expedition-ready equipment which includes two six-seat helicopters, a fleet of Zodiacs and Kayaks and a six-seat submarine that is capable of reaching depths of nearly 200 metres.

The ship offers luxurious Veranda Suite accommodation for no more than 228 guests, complete with butler service for all guests. Her 1:1 guest-to-staff ratio conveys a Scenic’s dedication to world-class service, while her ten dining options include everything from Asia Fusion in Koko’s to French fine dining in Lumiere – as well a Chef’s Table and pool-side buffet.

Where relaxation and wellness are concerned, Scenic Eclipse boasts 550 m² spa area with a well-equipped gym, and a separate yoga and Pilates studio, while lectures and much of the onboard entertainment programme takes place in the ship’s state-of-the-art theatre.
