Cunard Line Celebrates 175 Anniversary in Liverpool

Cunard recently celebrated its 175th anniversary in Liverpool, it was quite an event and over one million people turned out to see the three Queens arrive and perform their ‘Riverdance’.

In our blog today, we wanted to share with you some facts and figures from the event – we think you will be quite impressed!

Cunard 175 – The facts

On 25 May, landside crowds exceeded 1.3m making the Three Queens’  ‘Riverdance’ the biggest maritime event in Liverpool’s history

160 accredited photographers and journalists came to Liverpool for the events – a record for the city

Cunard made front page of The Times, were featured in the Daily Telegraph on page 3 and had coverage in all of the National newspapers

The cruise line had colossal support from broadcasters with coverage appearing on the BBC, ITV, Channel 5, Sky and BBC’s Radio 2 & 4. The One Show also featured a Cunard segment in the lead up to the events.

Three Queens was mentioned by Bootle MP Peter Dowd in The Queen’s Speech debate in Parliament

BBC North West TV broadcast a half hour special programme “Ocean Queens: The Story of Cunard” about 175 which went out on 29 May and is available on ITV Player. This is also likely to run on networked BBC2 in June.

Internationally, the Cunard Three Queens story was featured on CNN, NBC and USA Today as well as Australia’s Channel 7.

Guests on board were having a great time too – and sales of on board photography did particularly well!

Cunard 175 – The Figures

For the month of May, Cunard 175 was featured in 1,432 articles and in 2,084 media clips

News of Cunard 175 has reached an estimated 993m people

If Cunard had to pay for the media coverage they have gained in the UK so far this year, they would have had to buy £14m+ worth of advertising space!

Cunard’s tweets made nearly 774,000 impressions

Facebook updates reached an estimated 1.18m people

#3Queens trended in 2nd place on Twitter in the UK and remained top five all day on 25 May

Needless to say Queen Mary 2, Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria certainly made an impression on not just the UK, but the entire world!
