Cruises to the Frozen Planet

Unless you’ve actually been in one of the Polar Regions for the past three weeks, then no doubt you’ll be aware of the BBC’s latest nature documentary series, Frozen Planet.  Narrated by the legendary David Attenborough, this brilliantly crafted series has captured the imagination of millions, bringing to life the vast expanses of the Arctic and Antarctica in glorious style.

Its documentary film making at it’s very best, perfectly capturing some of the world’s most captivating wildlife species in an environment that manages to be both utterly beautiful and relentlessly unforgiving at the same time.  For every comical penguin belly-flopping his way across a glacier there’s a polar bear ready to fight to the death to stake his claim for a prospective female mate.  The backdrop is as magnificent as you would expect; miles and miles of pristine white planes, mountain-sized ice-caps and the deepest blue water you could possibly imagine – it’s easy to see why the Polar Regions have fascinated adventurers and explorers throughout the ages.

If you’ve been watching Frozen Planet and wondering how you might get to experience a trip to one of these unique destinations, then you’re not alone.  Due to the success of the program (averaging at around 7 million viewers a week and counting), we’re currently taking a variety of requests from many of our clients who have found their ‘adventurer spirit’ awoken by the show.  Of course, we’d recommend that the best (and most comfortable) way to explore the Polar Regions is on a cruise and as such, we’ve selected two cruise lines who will not disappoint when it comes to bringing the Frozen Planet to life.

Arctic Cruises with Hurtigruten

Norwegian cruise specialists Hurtigruten offer some truly special voyages to the Arctic Circle, stopping off en-route at some of the most remote ports of call in Norway.  Hurtigruten’s Arctic voyages promise dramatic scenery, polar bear encounters and the opportunity to catch a glimpse of the magical Northern Lights.  Once ashore, guests can choose to enjoy a range of unique experiences courtesy of the cruise line’s fantastic shore excursion program.  Amongst the trips and tours available, you’ll find snowmobile safaris, midnight concerts at the Arctic Cathedral and overnight stays at the popular Snow Hotel in Kirkenes.

Hurtigruten offer a range of sailings to the Arctic Circle.  At The Cruise Line we recommend their Northern Explorer Voyage, which is available from around £900 per person and includes a 7 night cruise and a complimentary hotel stay in Bergen, Norway.   Call 0800 008 6677 for more details.

Antarctica Cruises with Silversea Expeditions

If you’re looking to head south to Antarctica, then Silversea Expeditions offer a range of all-inclusive sailings aboard their purpose-built, ice-standard expedition ship Silver Explorer.  Silversea Expeditions are becoming increasingly popular for their lovingly-designed itineraries that highlight the best of some of the world’s most intriguing destinations and their Antarctica cruises are no different.  Along the way, Silversea will take you safely through mountainous glaciers and floating ice-floes whilst offering a privileged view of  sunbathing seals, penguin colonies and surfacing whales.

When not enjoying an exciting shore excursion, you’ll find the Silver Explorer to be a truly remarkable vessel, offering luxurious accommodation and first-class cuisine.  Every cabin comes complete with a personalised Butler Service and an ocean view, meaning you’ll be treated to some of the best views the world has to offer.   During the evenings you can enjoy talks and lectures from the ship’s onboard zoologists and naturalists or relax with a cocktail in the observatory lounge.

Silversea’s Antarctica cruises depart throughout the winter months in 2012, though availability is often limited due to demand so booking early is thoroughly recommended!  Call 0800 008 6677 for more details.
