Our river cruise highlights for 2014

A river cruise is an exciting and beautiful affair. The chance to sail effortlessly down some of the world’s most impressive rivers, making stops along the way at destinations worthy of every explorer’s attention. It’s relaxing, refreshing and above all else it’s a chance to visit places in ultimate luxury and comfort.

I suppose the hardest thing is deciding where to go, with so many wonderful places on offer it can be difficult to make the decision so I wanted to use today’s blog to highlight some of the places you can visit in 2014 and 2015 with AMA Waterways.

Romantic Danube River CruiseThe Romantic Danube

A romantic cruise along one of the world’s most famous rivers is always a big hit. Explore the wonder and beauty of Europe with great ease and take advantage of free tours and excursions at every port.

You will embark in Vilshofen, Germany and make your way past enchanting vineyards and ancient castles before arriving into the magnificent city of Budapest, Hungary. Ports along the way will include Linz, Krems and Vienna, all of which are filled with wonders one can’t wait to explore. In all you have the chance to visit several countries on a Danube River cruise including, Germany, Hungary, Austria, Slovakia and the Czech Republic.

Europe has so much to offer and your call in Vienna offers some wonderful options including the Vienna Opera House, St Stephen’s Cathedral and the majestic Ringstrasse. The ship is often moored overnight so you will also have the option to go ashore and enjoy a delicious evening meal or even join a Mozart and Strauss concert.

Budapest allows you the chance to visit the historic Buda Castle from where you can enjoy splendid views of the twin cities, Buda and Pest that are spread across both banks of the river. A real sight to see.

Enticing Douro River CruiseEnticing Douro

The Douro River is your gateway to the beauty of Portugal and Spain. Enjoy sleepy fishing villages, lush countryside and the opportunity to explore cities such as Salamanca, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Your itinerary will begin in Lisbon and you can often find yourself enjoying 2 or even 3 nights here before embarking on your river cruise adventure. This is an ideal opportunity to explore and take in everything the city has to offer with free excursions including a city tour and Sintra and Fatima excursions.

When the time comes to board your luxury river boat your itinerary will see you call at places including Regua, Barca d’Alva, Pinhao and Bitetos before arriving in Porto.

Your cruise includes superb dining and complimentary local wines and beers as well as internet access, transfers and of course deluxe onboard accommodation.

Black Sea River CruiseBlack Sea Voyage

The AMA Waterways Black Sea Voyage is an absolute must for those who wish to enjoy a river cruise offering some of Europe’s most impressive landscapes and stunning architecture.

Cruise along the boundary between Serbia and Croatia, traverse the narrow gorges of the Iron Gates that divide Europe’s Balkan and Carpathian Mountains and sail along the Romanian-Bulgarian border to Bucharest – Need I say anymore? Probably not but let’s see what else is offered.

Again you can enjoy complimentary shore excursions in every port and they often include wine tasting in Vilany, Yugoslav Civil War tour in Vukovar, Bucharest open air museum in Giurgiu and a city tour in Veliko Tarnovo. Remember these are just a handful of the options that are available to you!

A Black Sea voyage also offers the chance of pre or post-cruise accommodation so you can explore your embarkation and disembarkation ports in full. You can extend your trip with a one night stay in Bulgaria and/or include a 3-night post-cruise stay in Istanbul. Don’t worry about getting to the ship as all transfers are included.

Russian Waterways River CruiseRussian Waterways

Russian river cruises offer something a little less traditional when it comes to river cruising and it’s easy to see why they are becoming such a big hit.

Starting with a panoramic view of Moscow and its unforgettable architecture, you will enjoy first-class service in luxurious accommodation as you take in the very best of the Baltic canals from the comfort of your river boat.

Journey through the very heart and soul of Russia before cruising north towards the Golden Ring cities of Yaroslavl and Uglich. Continue along the Volga-Baltic canals and across two of Europe’s largest lakes, Onega and Ladoga before arriving in St Petersburg.

Stops along the way include Moscow for a tour of the Kremlin and Armoury, Uglich where you have the chance to explore the Church of Dimitry on the Blood, Goritsy where you can marvel at the St Cyril Monastery and St Petersburg where an unforgettable Ballet performance at the Hermitage Theatre awaits you.

A Russian river cruise really is something special and if you are a seasoned river cruiser looking for something new then this is the ideal option for you.
