Viking Expeditions To Launch In 2022
Viking Expeditions will offer a range of itineraries in the Arctic, Antarctica and Great Lakes designed to satisfy "curious explorers".
The new arm of Viking's business will launch in 2022 with two purpose-built, 378-guest ships; Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris. The vessels, which are currently under construction in Romania, will combine Viking's customary comfort and elegance with state-of-the-art technology and adventure-ready facilities, including a fleet of Zodiacs, two submarines and an onboard science laboratory.
Viking Octantis will be the first of the new ships to make her debut in January 2022 and will sail itineraries in Antarctica and North America's Great Lakes, while Viking Polaris will explore the Arctic on a series of 13-day voyages in the Arctic from mid-August 2022.
Speaking at a launch event in Los Angeles, Viking's founder and chairman, Torstein Hagen, said:
"In creating 'the thinking person's expedition', we are perfecting polar expedition cruising, and we will usher in a new era of comfortable exploration in the heart of North America. Our guests are curious explorers. They want to continue travelling with us to familiar and iconic destinations, but they would also like to travel further."
Now one of the most recognisable names in the cruise industry, Viking launched as a river cruise company in 1997 before taking their Scandinavian approach to ocean cruising in 2015. Proving popular with both new cruisers and those used to sailing aboard luxury ships, Viking Ocean Cruises have gone on to collect a variety of awards and were voted the 'World's Best Large-ship Ocean Cruise Line' by Travel+Leisure for the fourth consecutive year.
