Annexed by Britain in 1908 and still to this day claimed by Argentina, the South Sandwich Islands are in the South Atlantic, some 320 miles from South Georgia. The island's very remoteness makes them inhospitable to human habitation, though they are known for their wildlife including penguin colonies.
