Serena Melani To Captain Regent's Seven Seas Splendor

Regent Seven Seas Cruises have announced that Serena Melani has been chosen as the captain of the forthcoming Seven Seas Splendor.

The announcement, made on International Women's Day, means that Captain Melani will be the first female captain to launch a new ship in the cruise industry.

Born in Italy in 1974, Captain Melani began her naval career at the age of 16 as a cadet working on cargo ships in her hometown of Livorno. Later graduating as a yacht engineer, she joined Carnival Cruise Lines in 2002 before moving to Regent Seven Seas in 2010. In 2016 she was named as the captain of Seven Seas Mariner - the first Italian female captain of a cruise ship.

Commenting on the announcement, Captain Melani said:

“There is a growing number of very talented female captains emerging in our industry, and we’re very proud to be pioneers for those women who aspire to lead the bridge.”

Captain Melani will begin her stewardship of Seven Seas Splendor in February 2020, when the ship embarks on her 14-night maiden voyage from Barcelona to Miami.
