Ponant Icebreaker Annoucement

Ponant Cruises has announced that its fleet will expand in 2021 with the addition of a new expedition ship, Ponant Icebreaker.

Ponant Icebreaker will be constructed by the VARD ship-building company and will offer capacity for no more than 270 guests across 135 staterooms and suites. The ship will be equipped with a fleet of Zodiac dinghies and two onboard helicopters, both of which will be available to use for excursions and sight-seeing opportunities.

The French flag cruise line believes Ponant Icebreaker will be the world’s first luxury ship of its kind and plan to venture deep into the remote wildernesses of the southern and northern hemispheres. Featured voyages will include a journey to the Geographic North Pole and an Arctic Ocean crossing.

Ponant Icebreaker’s PC2 Polar Class hull will enable the ship to cut throughout compact ice and will have the ability to reverse in extreme conditions. The ships itineraries, which have been designed by Ponant Cruises’ in-house Expedition Team, have taken into consideration the line’s previous exploratory visits to the polar regions as well as Environment Impact Assessments to ensure Ponant Icebreaker will operate with the greatest respect for the environment.

Ponant’s Head of Expedition, Nicolas Dubreuil, believes the capabilities of Ponant Icebreaker will offer guests the chance to enjoy a range of truly unique experiences.

“With this extraordinary tool for exploration we are going to have available, we are working with a brand new concept in travel. The PONANT Icebreaker is going to enable us to visit places previously unexplored until now due to their extreme remoteness. I've already imagined winter expedition cruises across the Nunavut ice field, and to Greenland, to get within close proximity of the Inuit camps”.

In terms of onboard amenities, Ponant Icebreaker will offer a choice of three dining venues, comprised of two panoramic restaurants and one grill. In-keeping with the other ships in the Ponant Cruises fleet, she will also have own luxurious spa.
